English is a discipline devoted to the study of language, writing and literature that expresses ideas and represents the human condition. Through the study of English, UW-Eau Claire English majors expand their knowledge of the English language, learn to read with interpretive power and develop strong analytical and contribute to the world in which they live.

Why study English?

High school preparation

  • An English major is a reader, a communicator, a researcher, an analyst, and an organizer of information; therefore, high school students preparing to study English should be involved in classes and activities that enhance and develop these characteristics.
  • In addition to the four year high school program, students should consider advanced placement courses and other opportunities to study literature in elective courses.
  • Personal reading and writing is also recommended along with extracurricular activities involving oral and written communication and analytical thinking.
  • Since English is often a gateway to interdisciplinary learning, students should consider electives, or even a minor, in history, philosophy, the fine arts, journalism, psychology, social studies and political science.
  • All students who enroll at UW-Eau Claire are required to have a minimum of 17 college preparatory units including:
    – 4 years of English (at least 3 composition and literature)
    – 2 years of a single foreign language
    – 3 years of math (algebra, geometry, 1 advanced college preparatory math)
    – 3 years of natural science
    – 3 years of social science (1 must be world or American history)
    – 2 additional units in the areas already mentioned or other academic areas

  • Math 104, 106, 108 or 246, 4 credits
  • Foreign language/general education course, 4 credits
  • Humanities general education course, 3 credits

Spring semester

  • Engl 210, Introduction to Texts, 5 credits
  • Foreign language/general education course, 4 credits
  • Natural science general education course, 3 credits
  • Social science general education course, 3 credits
  • Physical education course, 1 credit

NOTE: English majors should consult with their faculty advisers as early as possible to build an effective plan for their specific program (i.e., teaching, literature, linguistics, writing).
