THE UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, Nobuyoshi Yasuda, Conductor
Under the direction of maestro Nobuyoshi Yasuda, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphony Orchestra presents an on-campus concert each semester, young people's concerts, performs annually in a tour to high schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota, accompanies one fully-staged opera each year, and is one of the featured ensembles at the university's nationally-acclaimed Viennese Ball. The ensemble has been invited twice in recent years to perform at the Wisconsin State Music Conference in Madison. Often associated with the Grand Teton Music Festival and with the Minnesota Orchestra as assistant to the musical director, Nobuyoshi Yasuda is in his eleventh year as director of the orchestra at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and in his ninth season as the music director of the Chippewa Valley Symphony.
JAZZ ENSEMBLE I, Robert Baca, Director
The University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Jazz Studies Area has a considerably vibrant environment with five big bands and 20 combos. The jazz ensembles tour nationally and regionally. In the last three years they have performed for the KBEM jazz festival (Twin Cities) (I,II,III) , the International Midwest Band Director's Conference (I), the Illinois State Music Educators Conference, the New York Brass Conference (I),The MENC National Conference (I), the MENC Midwest Regional Conference (I), the Wisconsin Music Educators State Conference (II), the Minnesota State Music Conference (I) and the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Jazz Festival (I,II,III,IV,V). Down Beat magazine, the most prestigious periodical in the jazz world, named the ensemble a co-winner as Best College Big Band in the Down Beat Student Music Awards in 1996 and in 1998. In 2000, Jeff Walk, a trumpeter in Jazz Ensemble I, was named Down Beat's outstanding college jazz soloist. This ensemble's latest recording, "Jazz in Clear Water: V ernal Fields," was just released in March, and it features many of the musicians you will hear tonight.
