What To Do in the Face of Uncertain Threats

Thursday, March 18, 2010
Schofield Auditorium | 7:30 P.M.

Natalie Jeremijenko is a conceptual artist who works at the nexus
of art and science. She couples art and environmental activism - “creating interfaces that draw people into the environment and get them to reimagine collective action,” as she told Salon.com. Her experimental design centers on political and social possibilities,
and limitations, of information and emerging technologies. Much
of it involves biochemistry, physics, neuroscience and precision engineering, and almost all of it is carried out through public experiments.

One example is the xDesign Environmental Health Clinic created
last year at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, where Jeremijenko is an associate professor of art. Another work, designed for a museum
in her native Australia, is a self-sustaining carbon neutral sculpture that doubles as an indoor air purification system. MIT’s Technology Review named
Jeremijenko one of the country’s top 100 young innovators, and I.D. (International
Design) magazine named her one of the top 40 most influential designers.
