CHAASE Experience

My role on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) Center for Health Administration and Aging Service Excellence (CHAASE) board allows me to represent the possibilities of an ever-changing professional role utilizing the strong foundation of my health care administration (HCAD) degree.

Working with people—especially the elderly and dying—is a special love of mine. As a teenager, I volunteered over 3000 hours at a nursing home. The UWEC program shaped my experiences from the past, and provided the lifelong basis for my professional life.

My most cherished professional position was as CEO at Stevens Square, a home specializing in hospice care. Following the death of my husband in 2001, I moved to health care education. Currently I am the Director of Operations and Administration for the Rural and Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP &MetroPAP) of the University of Minnesota's Medical School. Here, I promote unique year-long longitudinal learning opportunities for third year medical students in rural communities and underserved metropolitan areas—many of whom are elderly. This is a nationally and internationally recognized program, which began 45+ years ago to create an ongoing physician workforce for rural and medically underserved urban people. This advancing role in education provides the skills necessary to participate in the UWEC HCAD program accreditation.

As a 1982 graduate, and one of two students who expanded the UWEC Health Care Administration degree program outside of the state of Wisconsin for the first time, I am forever indebted.
