Spread the power of math

Thinking of becoming a math teacher? As a student majoring in Math Teaching at UW-Eau Claire, you’ll work closely with experienced faculty to prepare you to become a leader in your school and community. The faculty take their time to work with each student and develop your knowledge and skills in the classroom, and throughout your student teaching.
How will your UW-Eau Claire education prepare you to be successful as a math teacher? The faculty here focus on some specific areas to get you ready for lifelong success in teaching math:

  • Developing you into an effective, inspired and reflective teacher who understands mathematics and how children and young adults learn mathematics.
  • Exposing you to standards-based and traditional curricula (no specific curricula is endorsed) as well as the knowledge to see the strengths and weaknesses in any textbook.
  • Helping you learn how to reflect on your own teaching, and analyze teaching approaches and curricular choices objectively.
  • Providing you with deep knowledge of mathematics, both in teaching it, as well as how math is learned.

As a Math Teaching major, you will get your Bachelor of Science degree through the College of Education and Human Sciences. Degree programs in secondary education require you to complete either an academic major and minor, two academic majors, or a comprehensive major in an approved area. You must also complete a full semester of student teaching or an internship.

Mathematics, Comprehensive Teaching Major

To prepare to teach secondary school mathematics (grades 5-12), you can choose between a comprehensive major with 60 credits or a traditional major with 36 semester credits. Both options include the basic sequence in Calculus (Math 114, 215, 216), Linear Algebra (Math 324), Modern Geometry (Math 330), Probability and Statistics (Math 345), and Abstract Algebra (Math 425).

Mathematics, Teaching Minor

This complements an academic major in another field. You'll take 24 credits including Calculus I and II (Math 114 and 215), Linear Algebra (Math 324), Modern Geometry (Math 330), Mathematical Probability and Statistics (Math 345), and Abstract Algebra (Math 425).

Mathematics, Elementary Teaching Minor

If your passion lies in teaching younger students, this minor prepares you to teach elementary and middle school mathematics. As an Elementary Education major with a mathematics minor, your employment potential is significantly enhanced. You'll take Calculus I, a sequence in the content, methods and curriculum of grades 1-9 (Math 201, 202, 303 304), and upper level courses in mathematics including Discrete Math or Patterns of Problem Solving (Math 314 or Math 365), Abstract Algebra for Elementary School Teachers or Number Theory (Math 322 or Math 341), Geometry (Math 330).
