Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Finalists Announced

The Search and Screen Committee for the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students is pleased to announce four finalists for the position.

The finalists are:

  • Beth Hellwig, Ph.D. (Dean of Student Services at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington). Visiting Tuesday, April 29.
  • Calvin D. Phillips, Ed.D., (Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina). Visiting Thursday, May 1.
  • Gar E. Kellom, Ph.D., (Vice President for Student Development and Director of the Center for Men's Leadership and Service at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota). Visiting Friday, May 2.
  • Celestino Jose Limas, Ph.D., (Chief Student Affairs Officer and Dean of Students at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin). Visiting Monday, May 5.

Each of the finalists will be making one-day campus visits over the coming weeks. UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff, and students will have the opportunity to listen and speak to each candidate during an open forum on the dates and times listed below. The topic for candidate presentations is "How will Student Affairs support student learning and the UW-Eau Claire Strategic Plan?"

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

The University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire seeks a talented, experienced individual to lead a newly-created division of Student Affairs. Reporting to the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Dean of Students will promote the academic success of our students and the continuous learning of our community by providing vision and direction for programs that enhance the quality of student and community life. The Vice Chancellor will provide leadership for the Dean of Students Office, Athletics, Multicultural Affairs, Housing and Residence Life, University Centers, University Recreation and Sports Facilities, Children’s Center, Counseling Services, and Student Health Services. The anticipated start date is in Summer 2008.

RESPONSIBILITIES / POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Dean of Students reports to and works in consultation with the Chancellor and serves on his executive staff. The Vice Chancellor promotes the development and success of students by providing leadership, vision, and direction for programs that enhance the quality of student life.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Dean of Students office and two Associate Dean of Students positions.
  • Provide operational direction and coordination for the following student support services:
    • Children's Center.
    • Counseling Services.
    • Housing and Residence Life.
    • Office of Multicultural Affairs.
    • Student Health Services.
    • University Athletics.
    • University Centers.
    • University Recreation and Sports Facilities.
  • Advise the Chancellor and others in matters of student services.
  • Provide leadership in delivering a learning-centered student experience.
  • Develop strategies for promoting student engagement and learning in collaboration with Academic Affairs.
  • Communicate effectively with students and other stakeholders.
  • Foster an inclusive University community and promote equity for all students.
  • Oversee outreach to diverse student populations to support institutional diversity and equity goals.
  • Promote collaboration and innovation within the Division of Student Affairs and throughout campus.
  • Support the goals of the University’s mission, vision and strategic plan.
  • Represent the University internally and externally in student affairs, in areas such as:
    • Service on University or UW-System committees
    • Service on national councils
    • Service in community organizations
    • Media relations
  • Assist, or act in the place of, the Chancellor as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chancellor.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  1. Masters degree (terminal degree preferred).
  2. Record of success as an educational administrator.
  3. Strong record of personnel supervision.
  4. Ability to manage a complex financial organization.

Desired:

  1. Commitment to support academics and student learning outcomes.
  2. Knowledge of student development theory and practice.
  3. Dedication to fostering a diverse learning environment.
  4. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  5. A sense of humor.
