Physics and Astronomy and the Materials Science Program

The Physics and Astronomy Department and the Materials Science program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire invites applications for a probationary tenure-track faculty position in physics/materials science at the Assistant Professor level (higher rank may be considered for candidates with extensive experience). The position will start August 18, 2008. The tenure home of this position will be in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. In addition to serving the needs and interests of the department, this position will contribute to a new Materials Science major that is an interdisciplinary effort among several basic science departments

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is composed of 11 faculty, a program assistant, and an instrumentation specialist. The department graduates 10-15 majors per year. The department strives to provide quality undergraduate education to students with a variety of educational goals. Other areas of active research in the department include surface science, atomic physics, computational physics, optics and astronomy. The department is strongly linked to the interdisciplinary Materials Science Center.

The Materials Science Center is an interdisciplinary analytical facility incorporating faculty collaboration between members of the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Geology, Chemistry and Biology. The mission of the Materials Science Center is to advance production and dissemination of scholarly research in the field of materials science, to promote interactions among faculty researchers with local industries and the community, provide research experiences for undergraduate collaborators to enhance their education, and facilitate collaborations between faculty in various science disciplines. The center currently involves eleven faculty members and one technician working on a variety of topics in materials science, geochemistry, and surface characterization. A recent state supported initiative at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire brings the possibility of additional hires in the area of materials science. The Materials Science Center has a large array of materials characterization instrumentation, including a 200 keV TEM, SEM, AFM, XPS, XRF, FTIR, XRD, STM, and MBE chamber. Additions to the instrumentation capabilities are expected.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructional responsibilities typically include one lower division course (with labs) and one upper division course each semester.
  • Teaching responsibilities will include physics and materials science courses.
  • Faculty are expected to establish and maintain research programs involving undergraduate students.
  • Advising responsibilities may include advising of physics majors or students in a materials science major.
  • Faculty are expected to provide service through committee work and outreach activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A PhD in physics or a closely related field (materials science, electrical engineering, etc.) is required.
  2. A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and the ability to establish a research program involving undergraduates is required.
  3. A research interest in the broadly defined area of materials science is required.
  4. Research in materials at the nanoscale may be considered an asset.
  5. The ability to bring diverse cultural and ethnic experiences and perspectives to the campus and to serve as a role model and mentor for women and/or minorities may be considered an asset.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Applicants should provide a letter of application, a vita, photocopies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a description of teaching and research interests. This packet should be sent electronically via e-mail (MS Word attachments or PDF’s strongly preferred) to:
