Department of Mathematics

A probationary tenure-track faculty position is available in the Department of Mathematics at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 24, 2009.

The Department of Mathematics has 40 staff members and offers undergraduate programs in mathematics and mathematics education as well as graduate courses for teachers. Currently there are approximately 200 students pursuing mathematics majors and 100 pursuing minors. The Department currently sponsors a summer REU program funded by the National Science Foundation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The primary responsibilities of the position are to teach undergraduate mathematics courses for both majors and non-majors as assigned in the Department of Mathematics.
  • The faculty member will also participate in research and other scholarly activities, and provide academic advising to students as assigned.
  • Other responsibilities include service the Department, the University, the community and the profession.
  • The typical teaching load is three courses per semester with two preparations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A doctorate in mathematics is required by August 24, 2009.
  2. Applicants must have a commitment to undergraduate teaching at all levels and must present evidence of teaching excellence.
  3. The successful applicant must also present evidence of the potential to establish a productive research program that can engage undergraduates in student/faculty collaborations.
  4. Preference will be given to those working in analysis or applied mathematics.
  5. The department is especially interested in applicants who bring diverse cultural or ethnic experiences to the university, and those who may be especially effective in mentoring and advising women and minority students.
