Materials Science Program

The Materials Science Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire invites applications for two probationary tenure-track faculty positions in Materials Science at the Assistant Professor level (higher rank may be considered for candidates with extensive experience).  The positions will start August 23, 2010.  The tenure home of these positions will be determined based on the candidate's discipline.  In addition to serving the needs and interests of a new Materials Science Program that is an interdisciplinary effort among several science departments, these positions will contribute to the needs and interests of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Department of Chemistry, the Mathematics Department, or other science departments depending on qualifications.

The Materials Science Program is a new interdisciplinary program that has grown out of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Chemistry.  The Program currently is composed of two faculty and one analytical scientist.   The program strives to provide quality undergraduate education to students with a variety of educational goals.

The Materials Science Center is an interdisciplinary analytical and fabrication facility incorporating faculty collaboration between members of the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Geology, Chemistry and Biology.   The mission of the Materials Science Center is to advance the production and dissemination of scholarly research in the field of materials science, to promote interactions among faculty researchers with local industries and the community, to provide research experiences for undergraduate collaborators to enhance their education, and to facilitate collaborations among faculty in various science disciplines.  The center currently involves eleven faculty members and an analytical scientist working on a variety of topics in materials science, geochemistry, and surface characterization.  A recent state supported initiative at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire brings the possibility of additional hires in the area of materials science.  The Materials Science Center has a large array of materials characterization instrumentation, including a 200 keV TEM, SEM, AFM, XPS, XRF, FTIR, XRD, STM, HR-ICPMS, SAN and an MBE chamber.  Additions to the instrumentation capabilities are expected.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructional responsibilities typically include one lower division course (with labs) and one upper division course each semester.
  • Teaching responsibilities will include materials science and introductory-level science or math courses, depending on background.
  • Faculty are expected to establish and maintain research programs involving undergraduate students.
  • Advising responsibilities will include advising students in a materials science major and possibly other science or math majors.
  • Faculty are expected to provide service through committee work and outreach activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a closely related science or engineering field is required.
  2. A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and the ability to establish a research program involving undergraduates is required.
  3. Research interests in the broadly defined area of materials science is required.
  4. Research in materials at the nanoscale, and experiment-based research may be considered assets.
  5. The ability to bring diverse perspectives to the campus may be considered an asset.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Applicants will send only the following materials in a single pdf format file to the email address below: a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching interests and experience, statement of research plans, and graduate and undergraduate transcripts (official transcripts sent directly from the institution or unofficial transcripts sent in pdf format will be accepted; in any case, official copies will be required before the position is offered). In the teaching interests statement, please specify the math and/or science discipline (or disciplines) in which you are capable of teaching.  Applicants will also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly from the recommender to the same e-mail address.
