Department of Kinesiology

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire seeks applicants for a Department Chair and Associate or Full Professor (with tenure) in the Department of Kinesiology with duties to begin no later than August 18, 2008. This is a nine month appointment with an additional part-time summer appointment.

The Kinesiology Department is collegial, supportive, and dedicated to excellence in teaching. The faculty engages in numerous professional service initiatives, student faculty collaborative research projects, student experiential learning, and use of technology. The department is committed to high academic standards, intentional learning and teaching, and continuous assessment and innovation.

Two majors, Athletic Training and Kinesiology are offered, with emphases in Human Performance, Physical Education, Sport Pedagogy and Movement Studies. Minors in Adapted Physical Education, Coaching and Kinesiology are also available. The department also teaches wellness theory and physical activity courses to meet University wide requirements. The department is a growing, dynamic department and currently has approximately 600 majors and minors, and approximately 20 faculty and instructional academic staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fifty percent of the chair's duties are administrative. Those administrative duties require providing leadership for the department in consultation and cooperation with the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services and performing duties assigned by the Dean.
  • The chair is expected to promote and advocate for department academic programs; support curriculum development and assessment; promote faculty scholarly and service activity; manage learning facilities used by the department; effectively manage department budgets, including grants and scholarship funds; supervise tenure, promotion, appointment, salary and other personnel decisions, lead recruitment and hiring of new faculty; participate in department long-range planning; provide leadership through effective participation in College- and University-wide policy and decision-making activities; facilitate alumni relations; work with the department's advisory board; represent the department to external constituencies and in community and professional outreach activities.
  • Summer administrative work is expected with additional compensation.
  • Another fifty percent of the chair's duties are as a faculty member. Those duties require teaching, providing academic advising to students, and engaging in scholarly activity and service.
  • In the dual capacity as an administrator and faculty member, the chair is expected to be a role model for department faculty and staff, and develop and maintain a positive, collaborative, and productive work environment that promotes excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and advising.
  • Chairs are appointed for an initial three-year term, renewable for additional terms upon favorable review.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A terminal degree is required in kinesiology or a related field.
  2. The successful candidate must have administrative experience that demonstrates the capacity to serve effectively as a chair.
  3. The department seeks a candidate with an exemplary record of teaching, scholarly activity and service that would allow appointment to the position of chair at the rank of Associate Professor or Full-Professor with tenure.
  4. The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate and work effectively with the campus, local and regional communities, as well as professional constituencies.
  5. One or more of the following qualities may be considered an asset:
    • ability to serve as a role model and mentor.
    • ability to bring diverse cultural or ethnic perspectives or experiences to the department and campus.
    • demonstrated grant-writing skills.
    • demonstrated expertise in academic topics and issues relevant to all departmental programs.
    • significant professional experience.
