Department of Geography and Anthropology

The Geography and Anthropology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire invites applications for a probationary tenure track Assistant Professor to begin August 24, 2009. The successful candidate will teach courses in urban geography, economic geography, and geographic quantitative methods using Excel, SPSS, and ArcGIS.  Applicants must have strong database skills and a rigorous background in applied urban and economic geography, including the use of GIS as an analytical tool.  The ability to teach business geographics is a plus.  The department requires a commitment to undergraduate student-faculty research collaboration, applied research, and public service to the state and local community.

The Department of Geography and Anthropology has 13 full-time faculty and two academic staff, over 100 undergraduate majors, and offers several majors as well as minors in geography and anthropology.  The department is a campus leader in student/faculty collaborative research and in providing courses and experiences central to UW-Eau Claire’s strong liberal education tradition.  More undergraduates from the department present the results of their research at national professional conferences such as the AAG annual meeting than from any other department in the country.  The department houses a state-of-the-art GIS (ESRI software) and computer cartography lab in addition to considerable GPS and physical geography equipment.  Department faculty work closely with faculty from other physical and social science departments on campus and have access to specialized laboratory facilities housed in the Geology, Biology, Chemistry, and Materials Science departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Applicant will be expected to teach courses as assigned in the Department of Geography and Anthropology. Courses to be taught include introductory and advanced  economic and urban geography, and quantitative methods in geography and other courses in these areas of specialization.
  • Applicant must be committed to incorporating undergraduates into their research agenda, and the pursuit of interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Applicant will also participate in research and scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students as assigned, engage in service to the university and community, and participate in department, college, and university committee work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Doctorate from an accredited higher education institution at the time of appointment.
  2. Training and experience in the areas of economic, urban, and quantitative geography.
  3. Interests and capabilities that align with the department’s commitment to support the learning goals that are the liberal education core of academic programs at UW-Eau Claire (see www.uwec.edu/assess/goals/goalsBac.htm and www.aacu.org/resources/liberaleducation/index.cfm )
  4. The ability to bring diverse cultural and ethnic perspectives to the campus and to serve as a mentor and role model for students of color and women students may be considered an asset.
  5. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
