Department of Geography and Anthropology
A full-time probationary tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an emphasis in Anthropology is available to begin August 18, 2008.
The Department of Geography and Anthropology has 13 full-time faculty members, and two academic staff members, over 100 undergraduate majors, and offers several majors as well as minors in geography and anthropology. The department is a campus leader in student/faculty collaborative research and in providing courses and experiences central to UW-Eau Claire’s strong liberal education tradition. More undergraduates from our department present the results of their research at national professional conferences such as the AAG annual meeting than from any other department in the country. The department has an exceptional inventory of state-of-the-art geographic information systems, cartographic, and analytical capabilities that are fully integrated into our teaching and research, along with access to additional equipment in other science departments on campus.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Applicants will be expected to teach courses as assigned in the Department of Geography and Anthropology, including introductory cultural anthropology, ethnography, and other courses in area of specialization.
- Applicants will develop a strong program of individual and collaborative research that includes undergraduate students
- Applicants will provide academic advising to students as assigned, engage in service to the university and community, and participate in department, college, and university committee work.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctorate from an accredited higher education institution at the time of initial appointment is required.
- Salary will be commensurate with teaching experience.
- The applicant must have a theoretical background that complements existing strengths in the department, with preference given to an anthropological linguist or a cultural ecologist with a geographic specialization in Asia, Latin America or Africa.
- The candidate should be able to speak the field language, and be empirically and scientifically research oriented.
- An essential qualification is demonstrated experience or potential to teach courses in introductory cultural anthropology, ethnography, and other courses in area of specialization.
- The ability to bring diverse cultural and ethnic perspectives to the campus and to serve as a mentor and role model for students of color and women students may be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability and commitment to incorporate undergraduate students into a research program, and to pursue interdisciplinary collaborations, may be considered assets.
