Department of English

A probationary tenure-track faculty position is available in the Department of English at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to serve as Composition Director beginning August 24, 2009.

The English Department is a thriving, diverse academic community dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning. The department offers rigorous emphases in literature, creative writing, scientific and technical writing, linguistics, and education to English majors and minors. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct the English department's composition program and writing center.
  • Teach courses as assigned in the Department of English. A typical assignment for all faculty is 3 courses, equivalent to 12 credits each semester. The Director of Composition will be released from 4 to 5 credits of teaching per semester to focus on duties typically associated with administering a large composition program.
  • Members of this department teach composition every semester in addition to general and specialized courses.
  • In addition, all department members participate in research and scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students, participate in undergraduate and graduate program development, engage in service to the university and community, and participate in department, college, and university committee work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Doctorate required in English or related field with specialization in composition/rhetoric or writing program administration. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the doctoral degree must be completed before the appointment begins.
  2. Evidence of experience directing (or assisting to direct) a college-level composition or writing program.
  3. Evidence of effective teaching of college composition courses.
  4. Evidence of strong scholarly potential in composition/rhetorical studies, writing center theory, and/or writing across disciplines.

Strong assets:

  1. Experience with a successful writing center.
  2. Familiarity and experience with writing across the curriculum.
  3. Proven ability to work productively with faculty and administrators across campus.
  4. Commitment to undergraduate education.
  5. Ability to bring diverse perspectives or experiences to campus.
