This is a search internal to UW-Eau Claire. Candidates must hold tenure in a department in the College of Education and Human Sciences.

 

College of Education and Human Sciences

A full-time fiscal year limited position is available as Associate Dean to begin January 3, 2006. Training and transition will occur at the end of the fall semester 2005 on an overload basis.

Minimum Requirements: Doctoral degree, tenure in a department within the College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS), rank of Professor or Associate Professor.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overall: This administrative position, reporting to and complementing the Dean, spans three broad areas of responsibility in the College of Education and Human Sciences: administrative, student services, and academic services. Each area requires responsibility and decision-making authority for specific duties that include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership, including university perspective and coordination with other units, to the COEHS Academic Policy and Curriculum Committee.
  • Advising the Dean on assessment and accreditation activities and actions in all college departments.
  • Fostering and facilitating initiatives to increase participation of students from underrepresented groups in the college.
  • Promoting and maintaining excellence in curriculum development and improvement.
  • Editing and updating the University Catalogue and Graduate Catalogue.
  • Serving as the COEHS contact person for and managing student-related academic matters and services.
  • Supervising all aspects of undergraduate and graduate student services including university admissions, criminal background checks, petitions, appeals and records.
  • Resolving academic problems, issues, and conflicts, providing leadership for college initiatives related to student academic performance, and representing the college in campus-wide discussions of these issues.
  • Coordinating the work of the COEHS Appeals and Suspension Committee including communicating decisions to suspended students and informing students in academic difficulty of campus services to assist them.
  • Making fair and consistent decisions, based on consideration of policy, academic standards, and individual circumstance, on petitions or requests for waivers, substitutions, and exceptions from policy (course repeats, S/U grade basis, final exam time, others).
  • Developing and coordinating, in consultation with the Dean, a COEHS Student Advisory Council and a new faculty induction program.
  • Planning, developing, implementing, and assessing special projects in the college, in consultation with, and as assigned by the Dean. These efforts may include research and analysis to inform the planning of new initiatives; working with faculty and departments to plan, develop, and implement new projects and directions; achieve needed cooperation and collaboration among COEHS departments and faculty, and/or with other university units.
  • Participating in regular meetings with the Dean to advise the Dean and to guide decision-making, planning, direction, and problem-solving within the COEHS.
  • Participating in, and convening as indicated in the Dean's absence, meetings including the COEHS Chairs Council, the Teacher Education Strategic Planning Council (TESPEC), and the Teacher Education Program meetings.
  • Participating in and representing the COEHS at meetings of the University Associate Deans, Provosts-Deans-Chairs/Directors groups.
  • Representing the College on university committees focused on student and curricular issues.
  • Functioning as the building supervisor for Brewer Hall and Campus School.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements: Doctoral degree, tenure in a department within the College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS), rank of Professor or Associate Professor.

  5. Demonstrated ability or potential to use data-based decision-making procedures in applying academic standards and University policies and regulations to resolve academic issues, balancing institutional and individual student interests.
  6. Interest in and commitment to student achievement and success for all students, including those from underrepresented groups.
  7. Strong interpersonal and treamwork skills, including ability to mediate and manage conflict.
  8. Experience or potential to work closely with UW-Eau Claire student support units including Registrar, Financial Aid, Academic Advising, Student Development and Diversity, the Office of Research and Supported Programs, and others.
  9. Demonstrated interest in working with the full-range of students, their interests and organizations.

  4. Excellent organizational and planning skills, generally and specifically for coordinating and conducting special projects assigned by the Dean.

  7. Willingness and ability to represent and act for the Dean in the Dean's absence and to assist in developing agendas and facilitating college meetings including the Chairs' Council.
  8. Strong code of ethics and a commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality regarding student, personnel, and general University issues.

It is anticipated that screening of applications will be completed by the end of October, interviews completed by the end of November, and the new Associate Dean named no later than early December. The Associate Dean will assume the position January 3, 2006. An opportunity will be created for training and transition at the end of the fall 2005 semester.
