Materials Science Center

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is seeking applicants for an Analytical Scientist/Electron Microscopist in the Materials Science Center, an interdisciplinary analytical facility specializing in materials characterization and surface science. This is a full-time fiscal year professional academic staff position with an official title of Instrumentation Innovator-Research with a start date as early as July 2008.

The Materials Science Center is an interdisciplinary analytical facility incorporating faculty collaboration between members of the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry and Geology. The mission of the Materials Science Center is to advance production and dissemination of scholarly research in the field of materials science, to promote interactions among faculty researchers with local industries and the community, provide research experiences for undergraduate collaborators to enhance their education, and facilitate collaborations between faculty in various science disciplines. The center currently involves eleven faculty members and one other technician working on a variety of topics in materials science, geochemistry, and surface characterization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The technician will help manage laboratories associated with the Materials Science Center, an interdisciplinary analytical facility that incorporates an array of state-of-the-art instrumentation specializing in materials characterization and surface science.
  • Instrumentation within the Center includes a High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass-Spectrometer, X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer, Scanning Tunneling Microscope, 200 keV Transmission Electron Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive X-ray Microanalyzer, X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer, X-ray Diffractometer, and a Micro-FTIR.
  • The technician will assist with the development of the Electron Microscopy facility, and will be involved in all aspects of technique development, instrument control and maintenance, and other aspects of running a professional laboratory.
  • The technician will be responsible for instrument maintenance, repair, sample preparation and analysis in other high vacuum applications, such as XRD, XRF, XPS and STM utilized by faculty associated with the Materials Science Center.
  • Precise responsibilities will vary according to research priorities within the Materials Science Center.
  • The technician is encouraged to participate in collaborative research with faculty, undergraduates and local industry, as well as other scholarly activities.
  • The technician may teach some instrument specific courses.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The successful applicant will possess a combination of educational and professional experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively manage and maintain a diverse array of analytical instrumentation..
  • A PhD in materials science, biology, geology, physics, chemistry or a closely related discipline is preferred, although consideration will also be given to individuals with a M.Sc. and professional experience.
  • Experience in Transmission Electron Microscopy is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in instrument utilization, high vacuum and/or ultrahigh vacuum instrumentation, equipment maintenance and repair, electronics and sample preparation is required.
  • Experience with other materials science techniques such as SEM, XPS, XRF, AFM, FTIR, XRD or nanoindentation may be considered an asset.
  • The ability to teach instrument specific courses may be considered an asset.
  • The ability to bring diverse cultural and ethnic experiences and perspectives to the campus and to serve as a role model and mentor for women and/or minorities may be considered an asset.
