Gear Up Program

Two positions are available as Student Services Specialists. These positions are fixed term, fiscal year professional academic staff positions which are 100% during the academic year and 50% during the summer. Assignments are available at the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal School in Hayward, WI, and at the Menominee Indian Tribal School in Neopit, WI. These positions report to the Director of GEAR UP and have a target start date for each of August 1, 2008.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide participants with academic, college, career and personal guidance information and advocacy on an on-going and timely basis.
  • Serve as a liaison between the GEAR UP program and the school, parents, students, and community agencies.
  • Provide academic counseling/advising for students.
  • Assist the director in the implementation of academic, college and career planning activities for parents and students, including college and educational trips.
  • Maintain contact and communication with parents/family and teachers of participants on an on-going basis.
  • Maintain records and documentation of all activities and participants as well as educational outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, curriculum development or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations required.
  • Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal skills required.
  • Classroom experience and demonstrated program implementation and curriculum development or reading certification desirable.
  • Experience in advising/academic counseling middle and high school students considered an asset.
  • Successful experience working with low-income middle and high school students considered an asset.
