Administrative & Professional Academic Staff

College of Education and Human Sciences

A full-time fixed-term professional academic staff position as recruiter/advisor is available in the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education and Human Sciences beginning August 18, 2008. The official title will fall within the Student Services Coordinator title series.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The recruiter/advisor will be expected to:

Recruitment:

  • demonstrate multiple multicultural competencies in working with students and families.
  • have the ability to develop and focus on regional recruitment strategies and devise a long range recruitment plan to be incorporated into the Teacher Education Program strategic plan.
  • demonstrate competencies/knowledge of K-12 education.
  • demonstrate ability to navigate cultural aspects of communities of color.
  • assist the admissions office with targeted recruitment of students of color.
  • understand the programs in mathematics, science, and special education.

Retention:

  • devise mechanisms by which the needs and concerns of students of color and those seeking licensure in critical needs areas are communicated to administration/faculty in the Teacher Education Program.
  • work with campus offices to develop specific targeted retention programs for teacher education candidates.
  • collaborate across departments to address obstacles for students interested in the teaching profession.

Program Development:

  • work with academic services to develop programs specific for education majors.
  • develop workshops and presentations about the “teaching experience.”
  • ultimately develop a pre-college program specifically directed at middle and high school students interested in the teaching profession.
  • develop a marketing and promotion plan for multicultural individuals interested in the teaching profession.
  • develop a marketing and promotion plan for individuals interested in the teaching profession in the critical needs areas of special education, mathematics, and science.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's degree required.  Master's degree in teacher education preferred. 
  2. The applicant must have 2-4 years of professional experience. 
  3. Also preferred are skill sets in recruitment, retention, and advising of students. 
  4. Salary will be commensurate with professional experience.
  5. The ideal applicant will have affinity with one community of color and authenticity with others. 
  6. The applicant should have the ability to work collaboratively with Teacher Education Program faculty members and academic student services to assist them in supporting recruitment, retention, and advising efforts for students of color as well as students in the critical needs areas of mathematics, science, and special education.
