Biology

Applicants are sought for a full-time annual professional academic staff position as a Biological Laboratory Technician in the Department of Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The position is available beginning January 4, 2010. The official title is in the Laboratory Manager title series.

The Department of Biology currently has 28 faculty and academic staff and approximately 700 majors. Faculty and staff are collegial, dedicated to teaching, and actively involved in research with students as demonstrated by co-authored presentations and publications. Departmental facilities include six general and ten specialized teaching laboratories, numerous research labs, three greenhouses, an animal care facility, the James Newman Clark Bird Museum, and shared access to transmission and scanning electron microscopes, various molecular and microbiological instrumentation, and a Geographic Information System lab.  Research is funded by external and internal grants. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The successful candidate will assist the Department by coordinating the preparation and implementation of laboratories in introductory biology and upper level courses including laboratories in cell and molecular biology, microbiology, physiology, and others that require support.  
  • This would include, but not be limited to, ordering of supplies and services, managing course budgets, maintaining and repairing equipment, coordinating and orchestrating lab preparations, and supervising student assistants and apprentices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • We are searching for a broadly-trained biologist (minimum B.S., M.S. preferred in biology or related field) with technical expertise who can coordinate and prepare undergraduate biology laboratories, supervise student lab assistants, maintain and repair teaching and research equipment, manage course budgets, and order supplies and services.  
  • Some teaching and research experiences are desirable.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and the ability to bring diverse perspectives to campus will be considered assets.
