Who are the Writing Assistants?
Student writing assistants come to work at the Center for Writing Excellence through various interests. Some writing assistants tutor for course credit, for service learning hours, or simply as an on-campus job. The Center for Writing Excellence considers recommendations from instructors familiar with the prospective writing assistants. Such recommendations carry a high degree of confidence in the student's knowledge about writing and how she or he works with others. After prospective writing assistants are recommended, they enroll in English 397 (Tutoring Academic Writing) and learn the necessary tools to work with students from all disciplines in the Center for Writing Excellence.
- Reading a student's work with a good sense of what makes a piece of writing effective
- Knowing how to ask questions of a writer that will help achieve the goals of the assignment
- Recognizing that a piece of writing is a dynamic work in progress
- Encouraging the student to revise a paper to improve upon it
