What is a Writing Fellow?
Writing Fellows are high-achieving, experienced Center for Writing Excellence writing assistants strategically assigned to work in writing-intensive courses. ELL (English Language Learner) Fellows work in English Language Learner courses while Interdisciplinary Writing Fellows work in upper-level (300 and above) courses.
What do Writing Fellows do?
Both ELL and Interdisciplinary Writing Fellows support the professor's writing instruction and the students' writing achievement by attending classes, assisting students during lectures/work time, meeting regularly with the course instructor, and holding office hours to help students with their writing assignments.
How does the program benefit University students and instructors?
The Writing Fellows program:
- Provides undergraduates with the opportunity to hold positions of intellectual leadership;
- Emphasizes the significance of writing skills across disciplines;
- Applies the concept of peer mentoring directly to writing-intensive courses at UW-Eau Claire;
- Creates new opportunities for intellectual exchange between the Center for Writing Excellence and non-English faculty
Do Writing Fellows get paid?
ELL and Interdisciplinary Writing Fellows receive an $800 stipend at the end of the semester.
Who should apply?
Writing Assistants who have worked in the Center for Writing Excellence for at least two semesters and who demonstrate strong writing abilities and interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity about the writing process, and a dedicated commitment to assisting their peers in a variety of disciplines.
