Web publishing on Lucy, the UW-Eau Claire Web server, allows fast, easy access to pages in your site. The information on this page describes the publishing process.

  1. Who can publish a site on the UW-Eau Claire Web?Top
  2. There are three types of sites on the UW-Eau Claire Web: Academic/Administrative, People Pages and Student Organization sites. Academic/Administrative sites contain official information for departments and offices. People Pages contain professional information about faculty and staff. All recognized student organizations are encouraged to appoint Web publisher/s to create and maintain sites relative to its activities.

  4. This New Account Form can be used to request an account for academic/administrative sites.

    Faculty, staff and students use the "Web Accounts" link in the People Pages site to register for Web space. You can also use this link, once your site is completed, to add it to the A-Z list. The same link can be used if you should ever want to remove the A-Z listing.

    Note for classified staff: Discuss the need for Web space with your supervisor. If it is determined there is a need, the supervisor must make the request for the employee by sending an email request to web@uwec.edu.

    Student organizations use the Student Organization New Account Request Form. Simply submit the form and you will receive a confirmation email message when the account is activated.

  5. How do I access the pages in my Web site (security)?Top
  6. The UW-Eau Claire Web resides on a Windows NT server. Access to publishing is done through a shared drive space and is protected by using your UW-Eau Claire NT account and password. The share name is the Web Publishing Account name with a $ at the end. Your share path is the server name (Lucy) followed by your share name. So, if your account name is 'LTS', your share path is \\lucy\LTS$. By mapping to this share from your computer, you have direct access to your files. For more information, see:


  7. How do I change who has access to my Web Publishing Account (Permissions)?Top
  8. Permissions for student organization accounts are maintained by staff members in the Activities and Programs office. Whenever a change in Web publishers is needed, please fill out the Access Change Request form.

    For all other accounts, when a Web site is created, one person is identified as the 'owner' of a Web publishing group. That person is able to add and remove members by using Outlook's Address Book. For example, if your Website is www.uwec.edu/xyz, the site's permissions will be granted through a group called Web.XYZ. More detail about how this is done is available on the Web Account Permissions page.

    The owner of the group is the usually the person who makes decisions about the site and its publishers, but can be anyone who will be available to change members of the publishing group when needed. Ideally, it should be a permanent staff member. The owner of a faculty curricular account will be the faculty member.

  9. How do I edit the pages in my Web site?Top
  10. While any Web editor can be used to create and edit pages, our campus supports both Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage editors.

    For simple editing, such as correcting a typo, it is generally safe to edit your page live. For more complex changes where you may not want people to 'see' your Web pages in transition, you may want to develop different Web editing strategies. For example, you could make a copy of your page, edit it, then test it. When the changes are complete, simply delete the original file and rename the copy to the original page name.

    If you are developing new categories or doing multiple page updates that may take a prolonged period of time to complete, you may want to develop these pages on your PC's local drive before copying them to the remote share area. While you could develop them in the live area, you must remember that they would be accessible to the outside world while in an incomplete stage.

  11. What's the best way to build a Web site?Top
  12. While there's no one best way to build a Web site, we offer a few suggestions that might help you save time and produce a site that suits the needs of your audiences. Planning & Design Questions is a document you can use to pinpoint those needs and help you think about design issues. Developing a Site talks about five key steps in the Web site development process including Planning, Designing, Production, Testing and Maintenance.

  13. Are there any style requirements for UW-Eau Claire Web pages?Top
  14. Yes, there are. But they are fairly minimal. Please read the UW-Eau Claire Web Style Guide for more details. It was written with one goal in mind--to help us to design unique sites that collectively combine to form one cohesive UW-Eau Claire Web site.

  15. Am I required to make my pages accessible to individuals with disabilities?Top
  16. Indeed, because this is an educational institution, you may be under legal obligation to do so, depending on the content of your pages.

    Sight impaired individuals may use special screen reading software which cannot read pictures, such as GIFs and JPGs. ALT tags can provide text descriptions which may be helpful. Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files at this point are unreadable (although readable formats should be available soon) and so text versions ought to be provided. These are just two examples of techniques that should be used to make your site more accessible.

  17. How do I get my page linked to the UW-Eau Claire Web?Top

Once your pages are complete and meet the requirements listed in the UW-Eau Claire Web General Guidelines and the UW-Eau Claire Web Style Guide, you can request to have them linked in the A-Z list or other pages on the UW-Eau Claire Web where appropriate at the discrection of the Web Coordinator.

    Send an email request with your name, type of site (office, department, student organization, curricular, etc.) and the site's URL to web@uwec.edu. The site will be linked as soon as practical.

  19. Where can I find someone to build or maintain a UW-Eau Claire Web site for me?Top
  20. The Web Development Office in LTS has a group of student assistants who can assist in creating or updating your site at no charge, as long as you meet the requirements. The Student Web Development Service has been available for a number of years and has been very successful.

  21. How much Web space am I allowed?Top
  22. We ask that you limit the amount of space on the server's hard drive to 50 mb. You can help conserve server space by:

    • Systematically removing files of pages that are obsolete and no longer being linked to.
    • NOT using the Web server to store files that are not used on your Web pages, especially source graphics and applications that consume large amounts of disk.
    • Optimizing your graphics so that they take up the smallest practical screen and file size with an acceptable quality or resolution.

  23. How can I retrieve a lost file?Top
  24. If you accidentally delete a file or files, or need a page restored from a previous date, we can retrieve them for you, within a limited period of time.

  25. How do I create Web forms?Top
  26. Forms are commonly used to solicit comments about a site, provide a way to submit an application or place an order and have the results emailed to a specified address. Since email message forms are the most commonly used type, an email message script is available on the UW-Eau Claire Web server for UW-Eau Claire publishers to use.

  27. Can I stream video on the UW-Eau Claire Web?Top
  28. You may have noticed several examples of streaming audio and video on this site. We are currently using Microsoft's Windows Media Services to stream multimedia.

    This requires that an media player application be installed on the user's computer to view the media. Pages need to be carefully designed with a link so that the player can be easily downloaded. For more information, please contact the Web Development Office, web@uwec.edu.
