Tips and How-Tos

Creating a Search Function

If yours is a UW-Eau Claire Web site, you can display a search function on your pages (such as the one at the top right-hand corner of this page) that will allow users to search for content within your site. It's as simple as placing customized HTML code in your page where you want it displayed. To do this, you will need to expose the HTML code using code or HTML view in your Web editor.

If your site is quite small it may not be useful to display a search. A site list might be more helpful. That's a call for you to make. Also, you will want to be sure you make full use of the capabilities of the UW-Eau Claire search by understanding how it works. See Designing Pages for Search Engines for more information.

If you decide this is for you, here are the steps to follow:

  • You may want to work from a test copy of the page where you want the search function displayed. If so, your first step is to make a copy of this page.
  • Open your page from your web editor and display the HTML code.
  • Locate the point in your code at which you want to insert the search textbox.
  • Open the text file named searchcode.txt and copy and paste the code into your web page where desired.
  • Make modifications to the code where indicated.
  • Save and test your page.
  • If you are working from a test copy, rename your test page to the appropriate filename.
