About CommonSpot

CommonSpot is a Web content management system which is being used to transition from an older generation of static Web pages to a more dynamic system of page generation for our official Web sites.

Definition of a Content Management System (CMS)

In the context of a Web site a Content Management System (CMS) is a collection of tools designed to allow the creation, modification, organization and removal of information from a Web site. It is common for a CMS to require users to have no knowledge of HTML in order to create new Web pages. UW-Eau Claire has chosen CommonSpot as its Web CMS.

Why does UW-Eau Claire need a Web CMS?

A Web content management system such as CommonSpot gives us:

  • Publishing without an special software. CommonSpot allows us to update our Web sites through our favorite supported Web browser virtually anywhere there's an Internet connection. Dreamweaver will no longer be needed for maintaining sites
  • No more mapping. CommonSpot eliminates the need to map a network drive before accessing Web content
  • Uniform design. Use of global templates provide consistent site-wide design to aid UW-Eau Claire's branding efforts.
  • Fewer errors. Web publishers will receive automated feedback about broken links, outdated images, content needing updating, etc. It also enforces the use of alternate text on images for accessibility
  • Decreased training needs. With CommonSpot, the need for technical knowledge about such things as HTML, CSS and browser compatibility is less critical.
  • Rollback of data. CommonSpot has the ability to rollback data to a previous state.
  • Schedule your information. CommonSpot users can schedule when content will appear and disappear from sites.
  • Role-based publishing. CommonSpot allows individuals to be assigned to various levels of access to a Web site. These levels of access can apply to an entire site or to specific pages within the site.


How was CommonSpot selected?

LTS developed a project charter and implementation plan at the start of the project. A workgroup was charged with creating a list of available software, developing a set of criteria on which to base a decision and evaluating products that fit the criteria. In the end, we selected CommonSpot, by PaperThin, Inc.

CommonSpot is also being used at several other University of Wisconsin campuses.
