The joint meeting of the University Senate Executive Committee and Academic Staff Personnel Committee was called to order by Senate Chair Wood at 3:01 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

1. Proposed agenda change:  postpone all Executive Committee related business to its own meeting immediately following this joint session; and consider consultation with the Chancellor as the joint meeting’s only business

  • Passed without objection

2. Consult with Chancellor regarding Search and Screen Committee for Vice Chancellor Student Affairs/Dean of Students

  • Policy calls for a consultation with Chancellor when appointments are made to constitute a search committee
  • Chancellor Levin-Stankevich
    • stated at the end of last semester his reorganization proposal and implemented
    • Committee must comprise 7 to 9 members appointed by the Chancellor in joint consultation with the Academic Staff Personnel Committee and University Senate Executive Committee
    • Chancellor provided handout that identified people from various categories
    • Prefers 9 person committee in order to include 2 faculty members instead of 1
  • Discussion
    • among those on the list in the unclassified position there is a nice balance between directors and non-directors
    • Chancellor tried to strike gender balance and identify staff who have diversity as a high priority
    • Chancellor emailed all people on the list to verify that they would all be willing to serve and all have agreed
    • Chancellor spoke with Ray French about obtaining 2 student appointments
      • Asked Ray to keep in mind those students who may be active in residence life or students who worked in the mentoring program in the Office of Multicultural affairs as those are two big areas under this Vice Chancellor

3. Without objection both bodies feel that adequate consultation has been conducted appropriately and are satisfied with the outcome

Joint meeting adjourned at 3:18 p.m.

The meeting of the University Senate Executive Committee was called to order by Chair Wood at 3:19 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

4. Minutes of December 4, 2007 approved as distributed and minutes of December 14, 2007, approved with minor editing without objection

5.  Open Forum

  • Update on Searches  - Provost Tallant
    • Search for Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences
      • Traditionally the hiring cycle for Deans in Nursing would be in September so we do not know how big the pool will be
    • Position currently held by Andy Phillips is advertised and the committee is working
    • Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Undergraduate Studies: the campus is working on getting nominees and there will soon be an election process
    • In regards to Kimberly Barrett’s position (Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students) , the Chancellor will name an interim to that position, which should be announced on Monday
    • Mary Ryan-Miller’s position (Associate Dean of Student Development) Provost would like to consult with Chancellor to see if any search should be postponed so the new Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students can select who they would like to fill the position, which will serve under them
      • Given the reorganization,  it is possible that the Associate Dean of Student Development’s job description may change so it might not be a good idea to fill the position before the Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students position is filled
  • Concern about the joint title and curious if there is a chance that position titles will change or will there be a Dean of Students instead of 2 Associate Dean of Students
    • That decision is made by the Chancellor and there is nothing written in stone so it is open to his consideration

6. Review of tentative agenda for a possible January 29th, 2008 meeting of the University Senate

  • Discussion
    • Is there enough business to call a University Senate meeting for the week of January 29, 2008
    • Academic Staff & Personnel Committee could bring 1 item forward but it is not enough to call a University Senate meeting
    • If a Senate meeting is not called January 29, 2008 then the next University Senate meeting would be February 12, 2008
    • If there will not be a January 29, 2008 meeting then the Chair should send out a memo to encourage committees to use the time on January 29, 2008 to convene their committees or to conduct other necessary business and that the next University Senate meeting would then be on February 12, 2008
    • The next meeting Chair Wood would like to bring forward one item about  System level informal consultation with faculty and academic staff representatives
      • can we agree to a more formalized consultation between UW System administration and the faculty and academic staff representatives in advance of policy changes coming out of system
      • seems to be a good thing except that there is some concern that some UW System people at a future time might seem to use this in lieu of full governance consultation, or “Super Senate”

7.  Miscellaneous Business

  • None

Meeting adjourned at 3:25 p.m.
