Information for Freshmen about Placement Tests
You are required to take the English and Math placement tests unless you have received college credit in the subject(s) or are currently enrolled in a college mathematics or composition course.
All students who have taken two or more years of French, German, or Spanish in high school and do not have college level credit in the subject are highly encouraged to take the foreign language test. (NOTE: If you studied Japanese or Chinese in high school, UW-Eau Claire has a locally developed exam which are only administered at UW-Eau Claire by appointment. Contact Academic Testing at firstname.lastname@example.org or 715-836-5522.) The only exception to the foreign language placement exam is for students who have been out of high school for three years.
You may only take the placement test once. It is important that you do your best on placement tests, because if your scores are too low, you may be required to take remedial classes and if you score well enough you can place out of courses.

When and Where:
There are limited options for computer-based testing for an additional fee. UW-Madison has partnered with Castle WorldWide with testing sites throughout the world.
Placement Testing During Orientation:
Placement tests will be given the day before selected orientation dates this summer. However, choosing to take tests during the summer will limit your choice of orientation dates and make orientation a two day program.
A $30 fee for placement tests will be included in your spring semester bill.
