ACTFL: American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

Foreign Language Testing Requirements for Wisconsin Teaching Certification

Wisconsin requires a candidate to take one of the following writing proficiency tests:

  • ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) (internet), or
  • ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) (booklet)

Wisconsin requires a candidate to take one of the following oral proficiency interview tests:

  • ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI); or
  • ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview - computer (OPIc) to Superior; or
  • ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview - computer (OPIc) to Advanced.

Tentative dates/times for the tests will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please remember that you must allow at least ten business days between the date your request is received by ACTFL and the test date you are requesting to test.

The ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) (internet or booklet) will be offered on Mondays and Tuesdays at 2:00 PM or on select Saturdays at 1:00 PM.  Plan to be at the test center for two hours for check-in, testing, etc.  If you need to retake the WPT, the test will be a paper-based test (booklet).

The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview - computer (OPIc to Advanced or Superior) will be offered on select Saturdays between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM.  Plan to be at the test center for one hour for check-in, testing, etc.

The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) will be offered by appointment on Mondays and Fridays.  Plan to be at the test center for 45 minutes for check-in, testing, etc.  Because this test depends on the availability of a tester, you'll be given three tentative dates with a three hour window for the OPI interview.  ACTFL may require you to choose an alternative date, so it is best to register early.
