Leadership Development Through Academic Courses
Adaptive Team Leadership – MSL 301
Students conduct self-assessment of leadership style, develop a personal fitness regimen, and learn to plan and conduct individual/small-unit tactical training. Students receive direct feedback on leadership abilities. Lab reinforces small-unit tactical training while employing the troop-leading procedures.
Applied Team Leadership – MSL 302
The role of communication, value, and ethics in effective leadership. Ethical decision making, diversity, spirituality, and survey of Army leadership doctrine. Emphasis on improving oral and written communication abilities. Lab reinforces small-unit tactical training while employing troop-leading procedures to accomplish complex planning and decision making.
Developing Adaptive Leaders – MSL 401
Develop student proficiency in planning and executing complex operations, and mentoring subordinates. Students explore training management, methods of effective staff collaboration, and developmental counseling techniques. The lab hones the students' leadership skills.
Developing the Leader Within You – MGMT 200
A proactive approach to developing future leaders. Primary focus is aiding participants in gaining a better understanding and awareness of self-leadership and the effective leadership of others.
Essentials of Leadership – BSAD 155
Learn how "good" leadership has evolved, how to become a leader, and the roles of effective leaders. Analyze emotional intelligence, communication skills, team facilitation, motivation, and strategy as tools to develop your leadership skills and impact your organization.
Essentials of Management – BSAD 130
Introduces the skills needed in a management role. Learn about planning, organizing, directing, and controlling organizational activities.
Foundations of Tactical Leadership – MSL 202
Examines building successful teams, methods for influencing action, effective communication in setting and achieving goals, the importance of timing the decision, creativity in the problem-solving process, and obtaining team cohesion through immediate feedback. The lab applies basic leadership theory and decision making during practical exercises in a field environment.
Health Care Systems as Context for Professional Practice I
The health care system as context for professional nursing practice is emphasized. Leadership, followership, organizational structures, group dynamics, team membership, and delegation are explored. Focus on research appraisal as foundation for evidence-based practice.
Innovative Team Leadership – MSL 201
Identification of successful leadership characteristics through the observation of others and self through experiential learning exercises. Students observe traits (both good and bad) and discuss observations in small group settings. The lab applies basic leadership theory and decision making during practical exercises in a field environment.
Introduction to Tactical Leadership – MSL 102
Establishes foundation of basic leadership fundamentals such as problem solving, communication, goal setting, and techniques for improving listening and speaking skills. Life skills are reinforced as well as an introduction to counseling and operations orders. Lab provides instruction on squad movement techniques, map reading, physical fitness, and marching techniques.
Leadership Communication – CJ 407
Theories, concepts, and skills for effective leadership communication. Focuses on leader traits, behaviors, influence, values and ethics; on follower characteristics and needs; on situational variables; and on the influence of gender and diversity in leadership dynamics.
Leadership in a Complex World – MSL 402
Study includes a case study analysis of military law and practical exercises on establishing an ethical command climate. Students participate in leadership projects that require them to plan, organize, collaborate, analyze, and demonstrate their leadership skills. The lab continues to sharpen the students' leadership skills.
Leadership for a Better World – BSAD 191
An experiential course designed to help students analyze the values of the Social Change Model of Leadership, to explore their own leadership identity and competencies, and to help students understand how they can influence positive social change.
Leadership and Personal Development – MSL 101
Introduction to the Army profession and military leadership. Exploration of the seven Army values and 16 Army leadership dimensions, as well as some core competencies critical to effective leadership.
Management and Leadership in Nursing – NRSG 437
Examine nursing leadership and management using relevant theories and concepts. Analyze decision-making in relation to delegation, supervision, and group process.
Managing Global Organizations – MGMT 345
Examines issues in managing international operations including strategies, strategic alliances, organization design, culture, human resources, and labor issues in addition to political and legal constraints operating across regional trading areas.
Nursing: Management within Systems – NRSG 432
Relates systems theory to management and leadership within health care organizations. Management processes, leadership behaviors, organizational culture, conflict, change, and power are studied. The nurse's role as manager is examined.
Nursing Practice: Application and Reflection – NRSG 472
Senior capstone. Refinement of and reflection on clinical decision-making, leadership, and research processes. Management of nursing care for groups of clients across the lifespan in various settings. Transition to role of beginning professional nursing.
Nursing Within Systems: Analysis and Application – NRSG 480
Capstone course for CND students. Focuses on provision of quality care within a global and culturally diverse society, leadership within interdisciplinary systems of care, and provision of care in public health or community settings.
Ojibwa Language Camps – AIS 314/514
Teaches students leadership skills so that they may assist Native communities in developing and sustaining Ojibwa language camps.
Organizational Behavior – MGMT 340
A review of the theories and applications of behavior science research in human organizations. Topics include leadership, motivation, group dynamics, communication, conflict, and change.
Organizational Theory & Administration – MGMT 446
Examines the phenomenon of organizational change at the strategic, structural, and employee level. Specific emphasis on how leaders lead companies to adjust and develop to the changing global marketplace is provided.
Presidency – POLS 348
The nature and extent of presidential power; the President's role, functions and relations to various institutions, including the media, the bureaucracy, Congress, the courts, the public, interest groups, and elections.

ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES
College of Business Leadership Certificate
Offered through the Department of Management & Marketing, completion of the Leadership Certificate is noted on the student's transcript. Students pursing the certificate need to meet College of Business admission requirements. Students must have a B- or better average for all Leadership Certificate courses. Required coursework includes Developing the Leader Within You (MGMT 200) and Organizational Behavior (MGMT 340). Students must complete a minimum of five elective credits from the following courses: Organizational Change and Development (MGMT 446), Topics in Leadership (MGMT 494) and Leadership Communication (CJ 407). Students must also provide evidence of a bona fide leadership experience.
Freshman Connection: A Program of the Leadership Institute
The Freshman Connection is a three-day pre-college experience that seeks to help students develop life skills while gaining insight into the UW-Eau Claire experience. This program emphasizes the philosophy that one's ability to grow as a leader is based on one's ability to grow as a person. This growth is accomplished through highly interactive sessions that create fast-moving and motivating developmental experiences.
