C.L. Lindsay How Facebook/Myspace Pages Can Come Back to Haunt You
Monday, November 5 7:30pm Schofield Auditorium FREE!

"Entertaining and hilarious... offers straight and honest facts about many legal issues without all the complicated legal jargon" --Contra Costa Times
EAU CLAIRE -- Students will learn the essentials about the law in cyberspace -- what their rights are, how the laws operate, and what potential liabilities await them -- at a presentation Monday, Nov. 5, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Student advocate and attorney C.L. Lindsay will speak on "Trouble Online: Campus Computing and the Law" at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.
The advent of social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook have put both universities and their students in a precarious and largely undefined space. Students are commonly accused of online harassment, electronic stalking, copyright infringement and software piracy. Lindsay's program teaches students how to protect themselves both legally and personally when they log on. Interactive, innovative and entertaining, the multimedia presentation takes the mystery out of legalese and explains student rights in a clear, cogent and often outright funny way.
The author of "The College Student's Guide to the Law" (2005), C.L. Lindsay is a recognized expert in the field of student rights and educational law. He left his practice in 1998 to found the Coalition for Student and Academic Rights, a national nonprofit organization that offers free legal advice to students and educators. The group receives more than 10,000 legal requests each year, the overwhelming majority of them involving incriminating photographs, illegal downloading and plagiarizing.
Lindsay has been interviewed on national television ("The Sally Jesse Raphael Show") and radio (NPR), and has been featured in numerous publications including U.S. News & World Report, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post and Newsday.
The program is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate.

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week Event Featuring:

Jean Kilbourne Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction
Tuesday, Sept. 25 7:30pm Schofield Auditorium FREE!
|
Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D. is internationally recognized for her pioneering work on alcohol and tobacco advertising and the image of women in advertising. Her films, slide lectures and television appearances have been seen by millions of people throughout the world. She was named by The New York Times Magazine as one of the three most popular speakers on college campuses today.
Her lecture, Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction exposes the manipulative marketing strategies and tactics used by the alcohol and tobacco industries to keep people hooked on their dangerous products.
Kilbourne presents a compelling argument that these cynical industries have a clear and deep understanding of the psychology of addiction - an understanding they exploit to create and feed a life-threatening dependency on their products.
Kilbourne also educates the audience about targeting and the primary purpose of the mass media, which is to deliver audiences to advertisers and demonstrates how the objectification of women and the obsession with thinness are related to addiction.
Kilbourne's lecture is fast-paced and funny and shows how young adults are being manipulated by these powerful industries - and what a terrible price they are paying.
The Jean Kilbourne Presentation is Sponsored By:
The University Activities Commission (UAC)

EAU CLAIRE -- Tickets go on sale at 7am on Thursday, August 9 for a show featuring the world-famous Lipizzaner Stallions on Friday, September 7, in Zorn Arena on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus.
|
|
Making its 37th anniversary tour, the family-oriented arena attraction will begin its show at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.
Many horses and riders were brought from Europe to perform in the company. Over the years, more than 25 million people throughout North and South America, Great Britain, Europe, Australia and Hawaii have seen this internationally acclaimed spectacle, which last appeared at UW-Eau Claire in 2004.
All new music, choreography and routines have been incorporated into this anniversary edition. The show will emphasize the historical background and foundation of the Lipizzaner breed -- from its original breeding and use as a horse of war to a horse of nobility and aristocracy to a living form of equestrian art. The show emulates the Spanish Riding School of Vienna in its presentation of the Lipizzans, maintaining its traditional and entertaining performance style.
Also included in the show is a segment called "Airs Above the Ground" -- a demonstration of the spectacular leaps and maneuvers once used by riders to protect and defend themselves on the battlefield.
The Lipizzan is a rare and unique breed with a history and culture known worldwide. The 1963 Disney feature, "The Miracle of the White Stallions" -- which tells the true story of how General George S. Patton saved the horses from certain extinction at the end of World War II -- created an even greater international interest in the breed.
Although the Lipizzans star, other show breeds are featured -- including the ancestral forefathers of the Lipizzan, the Spanish Andalusian and the Arabian. The Andalusian is shown both in saddle and in a presentation in which the rider performs all the maneuvers of the Grand Prix Olympic-level dressage on the longline, while walking behind the horse and guiding him through his paces.
The performance concludes with the traditional Grand Quadrille, featuring six to eight Lipizzaner Stallions with their riders performing an intricate equine ballet, exhibiting maneuvers through the highest level of dressage. The Lipizzans prance, march and intricately weave their way across the floor to the music of the Masters in a spectacular ballet of four-footed white dancers.
Featuring 12 to 14 stallions, the show is narrated by Troy Tinker and runs just under two hours with a 20-min. intermission.
Admission is $23.50 ($21.50 for those age 12 and under, age 60 and over, and UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and students). Children age 1 and younger are free. Tickets will be sold at the University Service Center, in Davies Center and at the door.
Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 -- or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
A discount is available for groups of 15 or more. Call the Service Center for more information.
The show is sponsored by White Stallion Productions, Inc., and the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
