EAU CLAIRE -- The Dave Rudolf Holiday Show, a free comedy concert for families with kids of all ages, will be presented Wenesday, December 9, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The interactive family show will begin at 7 p.m. in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center.

Dave Rudolf's madcap theatrical production of songs, humor and heavy audience participation makes for an ideal family event. It features kids twisting to the "Candy Cane Twist," hula hooping to "Santa's Got a Zoot Suit," some traditional holiday tunes, Christmas parodies ("Oh Come, Oh Come, I Read the Manual," "The Little Dumber Boy," "Frosty the Slow Man") and lots of yuletide joy.

“Dave Rudolf captivates his audience," wrote the Chicago Sun Times. "Anything and everything that happens onstage or off during a Rudolf concert becomes fair game for his disarming wit."

Rudolf is a Chicago-area singer, songwriter and children's book author who has entertained families and children with his wit and musical talent for more than 20 years. He has written lyrics for Second City and Disney, his latter effort earning him a gold record, and his tunes have been featured on such diverse radio programs as Kids Radio, Dr. Demento and NPR. A 15-time nominee for National Association of Campus Activities Awards, he has received numerous awards from parent groups, including three Parents' Choice Honor Awards. His clean sense of humor and infectious energy captivates both kids and adults alike and allows both groups to lose themselves in an enjoyable feel-good experience.

"Bubba Christmas" (2008), a follow up to his popular "Completely Cracked Christmas" (2002), is Rudolf's 22nd album.

Admission to the show is free. Candy canes, cookies and hot chocolate will be served. Donations of non-perishable food items for local food pantries are requested.

The show is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.

Byron Hurt visits UW-Eau Claire on November 5!! EAU CLAIRE -- "Beyond Beats and
Rhymes: An Evening with Byron Hurt"
will be presented Thursday, Nov. 5,
at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The award-winning documentary filmmaker and an anti-sexist activist will speak at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

Byron Hurt addresses provocative topics such as race, gender and violence through his films, writings and lectures. He will begin the evening with a screening of his acclaimed 2006 film, "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes," an hour-long documentary that examines masculinity, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture. Delivering what he describes as a loving critique of rap music, Hurt pays tribute to the power and creativity of hip-hop, while challenging the rap music industry to take responsibility for glamorizing destructive stereotypes of manhood in general and perpetuating negative myths about African American males in particular. Critically acclaimed for its fearless engagement with issues of race and racism, gender violence, and the corporate exploitation of youth culture, the film is as entertaining as it is educational.

"In the wake of Byron Hurt's searing documentary 'Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes,' hip-hop fans have questioned the retarding effect that hip hop has had on young black men through encouraging thuggish violence, misogyny, clownish behavior and crude materialism," cultural critic Stanley Crouch wrote last year. "Hurt's documentary is most powerful because the filmmaker himself is a fan of the idiom but, as a grown and responsible man, he felt it was necessary to call out hip hop's many shortcomings because the idiom had moved from clever rhymes and dance beats to advocating personal, social and criminal corruption."

Featuring revealing interviews with famous rappers including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Fat Joe, Chuck D, Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. It aired nationally in 2007 on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series "Independent Lens," and drew an audience of more than 1.3 million viewers. The film has been selected to appear in more than 50 film festivals worldwide, and the Chicago Tribune named it one of the best documentary films of 2007.

In addition to being a filmmaker, Hurt is a nationally respected activist and long-time gender violence prevention educator. The former Northeastern University football quarterback was a founding member of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, a college-based rape and domestic violence prevention initiative for college and professional athletics. Hurt is also the former associate director of the first gender violence prevention program in the United States Marine Corps.

Hurt has lectured at hundreds of campuses, presented at numerous professional conferences, and trained thousands of young men and women on issues related to gender, race, sex, violence, music and visual media. His essays or interviews have been published in a number of books and numerous media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Variety and O, The Oprah Magazine. He has also appeared or been heard on CNN, Access Hollywood, MTV, BET and ABC News World Tonight. His most recent documentary, "Barack & Curtis," examines how the media and public view masculinity in Black men by comparing and contrasting President Barack Obama and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

Admission is $8 for the public, $6 for UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $2 for UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the Service Center in the east lobby of Davies Center, and will be sold at the door. Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The presentation is cosponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate and The Forum.

The Lipizzaner Stallions
EAU CLAIRE -- Tickets are now available for two shows featuring The World-Famous Lipizzaner Stallions on Sunday, September 13, in Zorn Arena on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus.

Making its 40th anniversary tour, the family-oriented arena attraction will presented at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

Many horses and riders were brought from Europe to perform in the company. Over the years, more than 25 million people throughout North and South America, Great Britain, Europe, Australia and Hawaii have seen this internationally acclaimed spectacle, which last appeared at UW-Eau Claire in 2007.

All new music, choreography and routines have been incorporated into this anniversary edition. The show will emphasize the historical background and foundation of the Lipizzaner breed -- from its original breeding and use as a horse of war to a horse of nobility and aristocracy to a living form of equestrian art. The show emulates the Spanish Riding School of Vienna in its presentation of the Lipizzans, maintaining its traditional and entertaining performance style.

Also included in the show is a segment called "Airs Above the Ground" -- a demonstration of the spectacular leaps and maneuvers once used by riders to protect and defend themselves on the battlefield.

Airs Above The Ground

The Lipizzan is a rare and unique breed with a history and culture known worldwide. The 1963 Disney feature, "The Miracle of the White Stallions" -- which tells the true story of how General George S. Patton saved the horses from certain extinction at the end of World War II -- created an even greater international interest in the breed.

Although the Lipizzans star, other show breeds are featured -- including the ancestral forefathers of the Lipizzan, the Spanish Andalusian and the Arabian. The Andalusian is shown both in saddle and in a presentation in which the rider performs all the maneuvers of the Grand Prix Olympic-level dressage on the longline, while walking behind the horse and guiding him through his paces.

The performance concludes with the traditional Grand Quadrille, featuring six to eight Lipizzaner Stallions with their riders performing an intricate equine ballet, exhibiting maneuvers through the highest level of dressage. The Lipizzans prance, march and intricately weave their way across the floor to the music of the Masters in a spectacular ballet of four-footed white dancers.

Featuring 12 to 14 stallions, the narrated show runs just under two hours with a 20-min. intermission.

Admission is $25.50 ($23.50 for those age 12 and under, age 60 and over, and UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and students). Children age 2 and younger are free. Tickets can be purchased at the University Service Center, in Davies Center and at the door.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 -- or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

A discount is available for groups of 15 or more. Call the Service Center for more information.

The show is sponsored by White Stallion Productions, Inc., and the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
