Student Organizations

There are two student organizations associated with the Department: the Sociology Organization for Students (SOS) and the sociology honors society, Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD).

Both organizations provide students with an opportunity for extracurricular interaction with fellow majors or minors and to become more knowledgeable about their respective fields of study.

Membership in SOS is open to all interested majors or minors.

Membership in AKD is by invitation only, with letters sent out each spring. At the present time, there are 418 Chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta located at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Eligibility for membership requires that a person be of at least junior standing; possess a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0; have at least a 3.2 grade point average in all sociology courses taken; and have completed a minimum of five (5) regular courses in sociology exclusive of any courses taken as pass-fail.

As a member of AKD you will enjoy a number of benefits which include the opportunity to participate in prestigious paper competitions, the opportunity to participate in Honor's Week activities, and the experience of belonging to a community of scholars. A practical consideration is the fact that the United States Civil Service Commission typically grants an automatic two-step upward adjustment of your GS rating if you are a member of a college/university honor society. In addition, you will be able to keep abreast of the latest research in the field of sociology through your subscription to the journal Sociological Inquiry.
