Agency/Organization: United Volunteer Caregivers, Inc.
Project Description: The need addressed by this volunteer opportunity will help an elderly person maintain their independence and stay in their home. Volunteer help keeps the elder in the local community where they continue to do business locally and maintain their network of relationships. The student will learn how to work with older adults, and gain an understanding of aging issues and the effects of aging on an individual and on family dynamics. The project involves an interview followed by training on UVC policies and procedures. The orientation session is approximately 1.5 hours. Background checks are also conducted and three references are requested. After orientation, students are then matched with an older adult who need help. This arrangement may be a 1- or 2-time event, or ongoing on a weekly basis. Student will be expected to set up and maintain a schedule of assistance that will be agreed upon in advance. Student will be in with our office via phone or email at least monthly with the number of hours spent volunteering and updates on how their care receiver is doing.
Skills/Availability Requirement: Students must demonstrate an interest in working with older people. Volunteers must have patience, compassion, understanding and a willingness to listen. Volunteers must maintain confidentiality about the people they will help. Volunteers are able to choose what type of tasks they wish to help with, where in Trempealeau County, Buffalo County, and Pepin County they wish to work and what type of schedule they wish to keep. This type of work is especially suited for individuals who like to do yard work such as mowing and gardening during the summer months. For those who want to extend their time to gather more hours of service time after school starts in the fall, weekends work well for those who may live in Trempealeau county and come home for visits.

This event would run on an afternoon between 12:30 and 3pm dependent upon the volunteers' schedule. *Event is less than the 15 hours indicated. A date has not yet been selected and again is dependent on when we can find the most volunteers. It would be ideal for a group of volunteers to select a date they can all come to help.
