Agency/Organization: UWEC Blugold Beginnings
Project Description: At both the national and state levels, institutions of higher education are working with the K-12 system to help more students aspire to and pursue a college education. Correspondingly, UW System participates in the Wisconsin Covenant Community and the KnowHow2GO program. Both programs support high school students who commit to high academic performance and pursuit of postsecondary education. However, a consistent, sustaining infrastructure does not yet exist for students who sign the Wisconsin Covenant. Without that support, many students do not have the necessary resources to successfully complete the program and gain access to college. Blugold Beginnings (BB) will support the Wisconsin Covenant and the national KnowHow2Go program. UW-Eau Claire (UWEC) will partner with North, Memorial and Altoona high schools to recruit low income and diverse students from area schools to be part of BB. A cohort of 50 ninth and tenth grade students will be recruited in spring 2009. One of our primary goals is to retain the 50 high school participants and add 25 freshman students in the fall of 2009. We are looking to pipeline the current Line Up for College participants into BB in the fall of 2010. These students will be matched with UWEC undergraduate tutor/mentors (TM's), participate in tutoring sessions, program activities throughout the spring semester (on campus visits, guest speakers, lab workshops, ACT prep, etc.), and complete a two-week campus immersion experience in June. As students progress through high school, they will continue to build skills and prepare for college matriculation by participating in UWEC's existing precollege programs such as the ACT Prep Course, intensive academic programs, career exploration, admissions advising and financial aid workshops. TM's are required to attend an orientation and training session prior to beginning their employment. Students will be introduced to the purpose of BB and become familiar with program guidelines and expectations. Although students will be meeting at local high schools or public agencies, UWEC staff (Teacher Education and/or OMA) will conduct site visits. Additionally, students will be asked to meet with BB staff at least once a month, or as often as needed, to discuss any concerns they may be having or offer feedback on their experience. TM's will be required to complete a log report that includes hour's worked and daily activities.
Skills/Availability Requirement: Mentor Responsibilities: Mentor two high school students, tutor students three times a week (five hours total) and instruct student on study skills, participate in on campus activities with student, monitor student progress using grade reports, individual educational plans, etc., and maintain daily log of activities and contact hours. Agency/Organization: 3-5 Club/New Beginnings
Project Description: This is an after- school program organized for students from second grade through high school , who are experiencing difficulty in studies for some reason. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church on Rudolph Road. Although the church provides the facility, this is not a religious program. The club provides an after-school safe place for students while at the same time offering one-on-one tutoring in all areas of study. Students are required to bring books and assignments and to spend at least the first hour with a tutor in serious study--home-work, test preparation, etc. When finished, there is usually time for sports, games, arts and crafts, and just plain talking, and this mentoring part of this program is considered crucial when working with these youngsters. Many of the students looking for help are considered 'at-risk.' They are part of the program because teachers, parents, social workers, counselors, and friends believe they can be helped through it. In addition to Service-learning tutors, about 10 adult volunteers (many retired university faculty members) are on hand to help. The program is free and open to all. We provide food, books, computers, games, friendship--they're all important. Our average attendance runs from about 35 - 45 youngsters, and from 10 - 25 tutors.
Skills/Availability requirement: Service-Learning students should enjoy working with children on a one-to-one basis. All majors are needed as volunteers. It is possible for Service-Learning students to work one of the two days each week. For those who may need transportation, we will come to the university for you and return you to campus.

Agency/Organization: First Presbyterian Church, Eau Claire, WI
Project Description: University students work with the project supervisors and at-risk students from 3:00 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the academic year at the First Presbyterian Church (2112 Rudolph Rd.) Retired university faculty serve as resources for tutors. Help is needed in all subject areas and all grade levels. All students are required to spend the first hour in study or reading, and the rest of the time (providing their school work is done) in games, arts and crafts, etc. The importance of mentoring is stressed, and when possible, students stay with the same “teacher/tutor” each day. Working with expelled students provides a greater challenge both in mentoring and in directing the needed studies.
Skills/Availability requirement: Meeting times are fixed. Where needed, we can furnish transportation. Because of the variety of needs, tutors may find themselves working with a middle-school student on a science assignment or a high school student enrolled in a correspondence course in English or an elementary youngster who needs help in reading or math. Tutors are needed in all these areas, regardless of their academic major.
Time Commitment: 30/30+ hours (full requirement)
