Service-Learning in Philosophy

Workshop Announcement
University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Sponsored by Minnesota Campus Compact
Co-sponsored by American Association for Higher Education, American Association of Philosophy Teachers, American Philosophical Association, APA Committee on Teaching Philosophy, Campus Compact, and The Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching & Learning

As David Hoekema, former president of the APA, observes in "Beyond the Tower: Concepts and Models for Service-Learning in Philosophy," "service-learning has come to be one of the means by which students learn philosophy and confront foundational questions of meaning, value, and responsibility. . . . it can help our students understand that ideas matter, that critical reasoning solves some problems, and that the real world is actually a very good place to do philosophy." The connections between service and philosophical exploration are most readily apparent in social ethics and political philosophy, but there have also been successful links in other areas, from aesthetics to epistemology.

Through a mixture of presentations and discussions, this one-day workshop will address topics of interest to beginners and experienced service-learning faculty alike, including: service-learning models, theories, and research; service-learning and disciplinary interests; issues involving work with community partners; building departmental support for service-learning; assessment of service-learning academic outcomes; and grant opportunities and other resources.
