CJ 307/507 -- Small Group Communication
  
 
3 crs. (3-0).   F, Sp.  P: Sophomore standing with total and resident gradepoint averages of 2.5 or above, or graduate standing.  GE I-A
Theories, concepts, and skills to improve small group communication.  Includes principles of group dynamics, decision making, problem solving, interpersonal conflict, leadership, and team building.

Small Group Communication and CJ Department Goals
Departmental Philosophy:  Long noted for the excellence of their academic and co-curricular programs, the Communication and Journalism faculty remain committed to a philosophy emphasizing the development, integration, and practical application theories, knowledge, and skills related to communication, journalism, and mass communication
CJ Program Goals and Objectives.  The academic programs of the UWEC Department of Communication and Journalism are designed to prepare students for responsible roles in communication, journalism, and mass communication.  The Department offers diversified curriculum in which all students can expect to develop in these areas: 
 1.  Oral, written, and visual communication skills; 
 2.  Research and information-gathering skills;
 3.  Critical and analytical thinking;
 4.  Awareness and knowledge of communication processes in diverse cultural, social, legal,
      and ethical contexts  
Small Group Communication is designed to promote the development of oral, written, and visual communication in classroom discussions, researching a social problem, and in written and oral reports presented in class; to promote the further development of research and information-gathering skill in classroom exercises and in the research of a social problem; your critical and analytical thinking skills will also be developed in a series of classroom exercises focusing on group problem solving and decision making as well as in your analysis of a social problem; and you will study the effects of diverse membership and diverse societal expectations on group dynamics.
    
Small Group Communication and the UWEC Baccalaureate

Small Group Communication is designated as a General Education course, not only because it focuses on the development of communication skills, but also because it contributes toward (a) an understanding of human behaviors and human institutions (within group contexts); (b) an ability to inquire, think, and analyze (group problem solving and decision making); (c) an understanding of values (how they influence decision making, conflict, and other group dynamics); and an appreciation of the university as a learning community (learning groups).
