Emergency Evacuation

  1. The University shall provide appropriate signs at each elevator door informing persons of the nearest evacuation route, rescue assistance area and procedure. The signs shall be in compliance with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act.)

  2. The Eau Claire Fire Department shall continue to follow its existing response procedures.

  3. Rescue Assistance Area signCity of Eau Claire Fire Department and UW-Eau Claire Public Safety personnel will determine whether the alarm is false or real. Upon confirmation of an actual fire or other emergency requiring evacuation, UW-Eau Claire Public Safety personnel will check the rescue assistance areas (designated stairwells) to inform any person with a disability of possible evacuation procedures. Where applicable, an "all clear" or instructions will be given through the public address system or from the fire department.

  4. The UW-Eau Claire Public Safety personnel shall inform the Eau Claire Fire Department personnel should a person with a disability need to be evacuated.

  5. The Eau Claire Fire Department is responsible for the evacuation of persons with disabilities.

  6. UW-Eau Claire employees and students are not expected to evacuate wheel chair users or any other person with a disability. Any assistance for evacuation is to be voluntary. Faculty, staff, and students must be informed regarding building evacuation procedures so that they can notify UW-Eau Claire Police or Eau Claire Fire Department personnel if they know that a person with a disability needs evacuation assistance. It is extremely important that the student not be moved unnecessarily and improperly, possibly causing further physical injury.

  7. To ensure proper evacuation, it is the responsibility of the person with a disability to follow evacuation procedures.

  8. The building coordinator, dean, department chair, or director shall ensure that the evacuation procedures are made available to all students and employees.
