Confidentiality

Information regarding a disability is treated as confidential information as defined by the Family and Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html

Information about the existence and details of an individual's disability can only be shared if the SSD staff has a written release of confidential information signed by the student. This release would give SSD staff permission to verify disability status with instructors on a need-to-know basis to facilitiate the provision of accommodations.

A student can voluntarily choose to share information regarding his/her disability with an instructor. If a student does share this information with you, please remember that the information is confidential and should only share it on a need-to-know basis.
