Information regarding a disability is treated as confidential information as defined by the Family and Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Information about the existence and details of an individual's disability can only be shared if the SSD staff has a written release of confidential information signed by the student. This release would give SSD staff permission to verify disability status with instructors on a need-to-know basis to facilitiate the provision of accommodations.

A student can voluntarily choose to share information regarding his/her disability with an instructor. If a student does share this information with you, please remember that the information is confidential and should only share it on a need-to-know basis.
