What nonprofit did you work with?
Montessori Charter School
What did you do for your service-learning?
I got involved in a tutoring program at Montessori Charter School through the university's math department. I specifically helped fourth and fifth grade students in small groups practicing curriculum twice a week for about one hour each day. This practice often included flash cards, times tables, or help on daily homework assignments.
What motivated you to choose this project?
I was drawn to this specific service-learning opportunity because I love math and working with kids. It was so rewarding to see their curiosity and excitement about learning! My goal was to help teach the basic fundamentals of math to these students, while also motivating them to enjoy what math has to offer.
Is your service-learning relevant to your field of study?
Yes, most definitely! Although I want to pursue a career in actuarial science, this teaching has exposed me to another door of possibilities in the teaching industry.
How did you impact your community?
It may be hard to see the effect right now, but the logic behind mathematics are the building blocks to furthering education. It will be exciting to see what kind of impact this service will have on each of these students over the next ten years.
Would you recommend this to other students?
