Eau Claire Skateboard Park

What did you do for your service-learning?

My service-learning project involved directly communicating with the community of Eau Claire through raising awareness and funds for a free, public skateboard park. I was involved in contacting local businesses for support and approval of fundraisers, promoting fundraisers via posters and social media, and giving presentation at city council meetings to raise support and awareness.

What motivated you to choose this project?

Prior to my project, Eau Claire did not have a free, public skateboarding park, which is something I believe this community could benefit from. In the city of Eau Claire, there is an ordinance that states skateboarders cannot skate on any street or road, so this park would give people a place where they can exercise their sport. Also, as a skateboarder myself, I am passionate about this project; so, this project was not work to me, but instead like a hobby.

Is your service-learning relevant to your field of study?

Yes, as a marketing major, I have applied many of the skills that I have acquired in the classroom to my service-learning project. From communicating with business owners and creating promotions on social media to compiling information and giving presentations to the city council, I have broadened my knowledge of both marketing and communications.

How did you impact your community?

Now that the park is available for use, it is a great place for the skaters of Eau Claire to come together and enjoy their sport. Looking ahead to this summer, we want to organize skateboarding lessons in order to teach the younger children how to skateboard and the safety steps involved.

Would you recommend this to other students?

Yes, if a student does not see something they like listed as a project, they should definitely do something that is tailored to them. I would recommend finding a mentor and supervisor based on their own preferences and what they really like doing. To be so involved with the Eau Claire Skaters Association was a great opportunity that I would recommend all students. If you are interested in getting involved, please email me at gostomkj@uwec.edu, or check out the Facebook page.

How would you summarize the experience in one sentence?

This service-learning experience was a great way to giveback to the community while pursuing my passion of skateboarding.
