What did you do for your service-learning?

I was able to volunteer for one week at the Wisconsin Badger Camp. I was paired with a staff member and helped facilitate with care work, which included helping campers with brushing teeth, getting dressed, and everything else that provided them with a comfortable stay. I also got to help out with the activities for the day like fishing, swimming, arts and crafts followed by a night group event like campfires, Badger Olympics, and the Badger Ball. It was such a great experience!

What motivated you to choose this project?

I absolutely love it there! I have worked there for two summers now. The thought did cross my mind that this wasn't for me when I first started, but I stuck with it and my life has been changed because of it. It was by far the most humbling experience I've ever had.

Is your service-learning relevant to your field of study?

My involvement with Wisconsin Badger Camp ultimately helped me realize I wanted to pursue a major in special education. In an academic viewpoint, it sort of had a reverse effect on me. I was gaining real world experience that enhanced my learning in the classroom. It made the text book readings and classroom content more real and applicable to me.

How did you impact your community?

In a camp setting like this we had campers from all over the Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa areas. I don't think this heavily impacted just one community, but instead each and every community that each individual came from.

Would you recommend this to other students?

Yes! I can't put into words how humbling of an experience it was. I know students probably face a lot of hesitation when it comes to this, but I know you can do it.

How would you summarize the experience in one sentence?

It was absolutely life changing!
