What did you do for your service-learning?

Once to twice a week, I went to the Heritage Court residential facility (specifically in the Alzheimer's wing), and played the piano for the elderly and those with memory loss. It may seem like simple thing to me, but to see how much they appreciate my music was so rewarding.

What motivated you to choose this project?

I really wanted to incorporate what I could do for my community into my service-learning. Yes, there were plenty of opportunities on campus that were inviting; but I wanted to get out into the community of Eau Claire and get to know my surroundings.

Is your service-learning relevant to your field of study?

Yes. I don't know what I would do without music. All art majors have that daunting question of, "should I be pursuing this major?" There is definitely a lack of job security in my arts fields, but having this service-learning experience lets me know that I could always do something like this for my life if my dream of conducting pits is not an option. Ultimately, it has opened my eyes to other job opportunities within my field of study.

How did you impact your community?

Art, is what keeps the brain alive. I believe that my playing is helping these patients with their memory, something most of them struggle with. Being able to do something I think is so simple has such a huge impact on these individuals with Alzheimer's or other memory disabilities.

You can really see them light up, and some even sing along with me as I play. I don't think we can quite grasp the long-term positive influence this is having on many individuals, but I do know that something amazing happens in the room every time the music play begins to play.

Would you recommend this to other students?

Yes, I would recommend this opportunity to other students. I wouldn't advise other students to rush into their service-learning just to get it done, but instead take their time and be open to different opportunities that allow you to go outside of your comfort zone.

Can you summarize the whole experience in one sentence?

My experience has been a motivating and inspiring one, to see the joy that can be brought from music, I don't think there is anything better in the world.
