Teaching Safe Bicycling

Train the Trainer Workshop
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire April 21st, 2007

Officer StrandOn April 21st, 2007, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety and the UW-Eau Claire Police Department co-sponsored a Teaching Safe Bicycling workshop at the university. Attendees were certified in teaching safe bicycling to children.

UW-Eau Claire Police Officer Jon Strand represented the department at this workshop and developed the following skills

  • How children differ from adults as bicycle riders and how the crashes they get into are different.
  • How to develop and organize a successful child rider training event in your community.
  • Work with service organizations, schools, community leaders, media and law enforcement to assure safe riding in the community.Officer Strand
  • Understand state-of-the-art skills related to safe bicycle riding and tips on how to teach hazard avoidance to children.
  • Experience hands-on hazard identification in bicycle riding areas and know who to work with to eliminate or correct these hazards.
