Surface Science involves the study of the physics and chemistry that occurs at surfaces and interfaces. The term Surface Science came into common use in the 1960s. Since that time there has been an explosive expansion in the field which has been driven by advancing sophistication in instrumentation and by an expanding array of surface property characterization techniques. Surface Science is interesting because there is usually a marked difference between properties that occur on the surface and in the bulk of materials.
