Physics and Astronomy Opportunity

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
This is a scholarship which provides an opportunity award to an outstanding student studying and conducting undergraduate research in any of the areas in physics or astronomy. The recipient must be a promising student academically, as well as in the research area. The recipient must be engaged in an undergraduate research project with a departmental faculty member or have already consulted with a departmental faculty member and created a plan to work on an undergraduate research project. The student must be able to demonstrate that the award will enhance their ability to spend more time working on their creative research project and further their physics/astronomy knowledge and understanding.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Application forms may be obtained in the office of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Applications should be completed and turned in to the Physics and Astronomy Department by March 15 to be considered for the scholarship in the following year.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Eligibility requirements for all applicants will be confirmed with the Registrar’s Office. If a discrepancy exists, the student will be notified in order to correct possible record errors. Finalists will be determined by GPA of the applicants. The students with the highest GPA’s will become final candidates for the award. The scholarship recipient will be selected by the Department faculty from this list based on: quality of the academic program and progress towards a degree; and the potential for future contributions through a scientific or professional career. The recipient must be engaged in an undergraduate research project with a departmental faculty member or have already consulted with a departmental faculty member and created a plan to work on an undergraduate research project. SELECTION DEADLINE: Prior to Honors Week

NOTIFICATION:
The recipients will be notified by letter from the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The Chair will complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid office.
