A book of short essays, it is a quick and fascinating read. Concentrating more on personal stories than discoveries, the brief vignettes are very effective at bringing out the difficulties encountered by astronomers in the years from roughly 1660-1900. It is by no means an exhaustive account of astronomy but a sampling of a few heroic struggles. Given that it is a quick read, it was certainly worth the time.
