First Year Experience (FYE) Requirements and Events

Syllabus, section 2

Religious Studies 100

Introduction to Religions of the World

Fall 2008

The goals of activities in this second section of your Syllabus are the same as the goals of the First Year Experience (FYE) Program overall:

To introduce you to liberal education and to awaken intellectual curiosity,

To enhance skills needed for academic success (reading, writing, listening, thinking, inquiry, analysis, use of information technology, library skills, and time management),

To help you connect to the University,

To engage you in meaningful academic and non-academic out-of-class activities,

To enhance your accountability for your education.

Your FYE learning includes both participating in events and writing about them.

1 – FYE REQUIREMENTS are related to specific FYE skills and learning, both in and out of class. Each FYE requirement involves participating in some event or activity and doing some writing in response to what you saw or took part in. Attending the events on this FYE section of your syllabus and writing your responses are as much a part of the course as the readings for each class meeting. If you are unable to attend one of these assigned events, you must send me an excuse by e-mail.

The first three FYE Required Events are the same for all members of the class. They are “Party House” on September 4, B O B (Blugold Organizational Bash) on Sept. 10, and the “Freshman Provocation” on Sept. 16. Some specifics about these are included in section 1 of your syllabus for Religious Studies 100.

Four other Required Events allow for some choice on your part. Attend one of each of the following three groups of events:

•  One speaker included in the Forum Series (Oct. 13, Nov. 19, or Dec. 8)

•  A theater performance or a music performance,

•  The Folk Fair or the Career Fair,

•  Attend Community Action and Service Learning Fair and volunteer an hour of your time, or take part in Crop Walk, or Tunnel of Oppression.

Consult your Planner for the dates of each of these events and mark each one.

WRITING ABOUT FYE REQUIREMENTS: for “Party House” and “Freshman Provocation” you must write one page, single spaced, and give it to me within one week after attending.

*At the top put your full name, the date attended, and the name of the event.

*In paragraph 1, report on what you heard/saw.

*In paragraph 2, respond to the event by telling what you thought of it, how it made you feel, etc. What did you think about which goals of the baccalaureate the event promoted? Did it help you think about anything in a new way?

For your written response to B O B follow the directions on the Syllabus, section one.

WRITING ABOUT THE FOUR EVENTS THAT YOU CAN CHOOSE: follow the directions above for writing about other FYE Requirements. Begin with a heading including you whole name, the date attended and the exact name of the event and the speaker where this applies. The only difference is that each page you write about these four Event must be handed to, or e-mailed to, your Mentor within the week after you attend the event. Consult the Mentor to know which method of receiving your work she prefers.

Your written response can earn 1-3 credit points, which are earned by showing that you attended the event and that you were a thoughtful, active, critical listener/watcher and thought about your experience of the event.

To receive a grade of 3 on one these 7 FYE Requirements, you must do more than just report. Your own response to it is necessary and has to show thoughtful consideration of what you experienced.

Attend at least 3 of the 4 Events of your choice by October 28, and you must attend all 4 of your chosen events by December 2 . An exception to this deadline is the Forum speaker on December 8.

KEEP YOUR OWN RECORDS.

Always date and identify you response.

You are responsible for keeping graded FYE Requirements in order together in a folder or notebook.

The reason for keeping them in an organized way is so that you, the mentor, and I can all be sure that you have completed all the work.
