AMOUNT: One award at $500 AVAILABLE: Available ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: This scholarship will be awarded to a student who meets the following criteria: accepted into the College of Education, majoring in Elementary Education, and has financial need. Preference should be given to a student that shows strong achievements in volunteering and/or activities relating to reading.APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Qualifying students will receive an email in December with scholarship application information. Also, visit the webpage www.uwec.edu/coehs/forms/index.htm and go to Teacher Education Scholarships. Complete the form and submit it to the Education Scholarship Committee. Ask at least one member of the Teacher Education Program who is familiar with your achievements at the University to submit a letter of recommendation to the Scholarship Committee.APPLICATION DEADLINE: Mid-February. Visit the webpage www.uwec.edu/coehs/forms/index.htm and go to Teacher Education Scholarships. Exact deadline will be in the Scholarship Applications Directions.SELECTION PROCEDURE: Selections will be made by the College of Education and Human Sciences Scholarship Committee based on published criteria as well as the committee’s assessment of candidate’s evaluation of potential teaching effectiveness.SELECTION DEADLINE: On or about April 1NOTIFICATION: The Office of the Associate Dean of Education and Human Sciences will notify the recipient by letter. The Associate Dean will also complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.SPECIAL NOTES: Reed and Barbara newton met at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire where both were elementary education majors. They married in 1956. Barbara graduated in 1956 and Reed in 1958. Several years ago they came to Eau Claire to celebrate the 50th anniversaries for their graduations from UW-Eau Claire. Reed spent his 35 year career as an elementary teacher and principal. He spent 24 years as the elementary principal in the Clintonville Elementary Schools where he was treasured greatly. Barbara spent her 33 year career as an elementary teacher. Upon the death of Reed in November 2011, the Newton Family decided to initiate the Reed and Barbara Newton Elementary Education Scholarship.
