Faculty and staff invited to 'Valuing Differences & Diversity' workshop

The Classified Staff Professional Development Committee invites faculty and staff to attend a True Colors® workshop titled "Valuing Differences & Diversity" Jan. 14, 2009, from 8:15 a.m. to noon in the Spruce Room of Davies Center.

The workshop will be led by Maltee McMahon, whose areas of expertise include motivation, facilitation and group dynamics. The presentation will be an interactive experience with the goal of helping to bridge communication gaps and build successful relationships. For more information, visit the Classified Staff Web site.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following deadline:

        • The Academic Staff Professional Development Program deadline for the second competition is Dec. 1.

Economics
Eric Jamelske will present results of area surveys on the purchase and use of locally grown food at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Chippewa Room of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire. Jamelske's presentation will conclude the library's Menu for the Future series. More information.

Bruce Taylor (emeritus) was the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets Nov. 1 in Marshfield. In addition, Taylor's poem "Middle-Aged Men, Leaning" was read by Garrison Keeler on National Public Radio's "Writer’s Almanac" Nov. 5.

Foreign Languages/English
Jessica Miller (Foreign Languages) organized a session titled "Linguistics: Language Variation" for the Midwest Modern Language Association Convention Nov. 13-16 in Minneapolis, Minn. Several UW-Eau Claire faculty members gave presentations at that session. Marco Shappeck (English) presented "Tracking Linguistic and Socio-linguistic Variation in a Spanish-Quichua Bilingual Community"; Miller presented "Swiss French Prosody: Discovering Intonational Features in the Vaud Canton across Contextual Styles"; and Maria Ciriza (Foreign Languages) presented "Social Network Methodology and the Study of Contact Varieties: Insights on the Basque Spanish Case."
