Nominees sought for McNair Program; Information sessions to be held March 4 and 5
The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, named in memory of the African-American astronaut who died in the 1986 Challenger explosion, is recruiting applicants/nominations for its 11th cohort of scholars. The program provides numerous benefits to selected UW-Eau Claire juniors and seniors who demonstrate academic talent and plan to enter graduate school to pursue a doctorate.

Interested students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, and Thursday, March 5, at 3 p.m. in the Birchwood Room of Davies Center. Bone marrow registration drive set for March 3

Alarcón

A bone marrow registration drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in the Oneida and Ho-Chunk rooms of the Davies Center as part of second annual Eberth Alarcón Peace and Justice Lecture Series. The process takes only minutes, and those interested in donating may come any time during those hours.

The Eberth Alarcón Peace and Justice Memorial Lecture Series was created as a tribute to the life of Dr. Eberth Alarcón, associate professor of mathematics at UW-Eau Claire, who died Sept. 26, 2006, after a battle against acute leukemia. Alarcón was known for his energy and passion for teaching and social justice.

The March 2009 E-Bulletin of the UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity is available online. The issue includes deadlines for support grant proposals and for priority registration for the upcoming IRE symposium "Supporting and Retaining Diverse Faculty: Research, Scholarship, Mentoring and Tenure."

Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will present Faculty/Academic Staff Forums this semester. The programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesdays in the Presidents Room of Davies Center unless otherwise noted. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or tray.

    • March 4: Rita Sperstad, nursing, "Facilitating Students’ Cultural Competence Through Contextual Learning."
    • March 11: Matt Germonprez, information systems, "Understanding Tailorable Technology."

ORSP program deadlines
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following program deadlines.

    • The Academic Staff Professional Development Program deadline is March 2.
    • The Summer Extramural Grant Development Program deadline is March 2.
    • The UW-Eau Claire Student Research Day abstract and application deadline is March 11.

Art & Design
Stephen Katrosits (emeritus) earned second place honors for his work titled "Made in France" in ArtsWest 30, a major juried exhibit for regional artists on display through April 10 at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire. UW-Eau Claire alumnus Scott Stulen was this year's juror for ArtsWest. An opening reception will be held March 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the library's gallery. More information.

Nadine St. Louis (emerita) will read from her new book of poetry, "Zebra," at 7 p.m. March 12 in the Eau Claire Room of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. More information.
