Dr. William Frankenberger, a UW-Eau Claire psychology professor and nationally known expert on issues that relate to attention deficit disorder, has received the Wisconsin School Psychology Association's highest honor.

The state organization recently presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Frankenberger, recognizing his many contributions to the welfare of children in Wisconsin and to the field of psychology.

"I think my professional legacy will be the students I've had over the years," said Frankenberger, who began teaching psychology classes at UW-Eau Claire in 1979 and has served as the director of the Human Development Center since 1986. "I love teaching; my students have enriched my life. I've had many students who were bright and ambitious when they were in college, and are now successfully working in schools throughout Wisconsin." Alumni donate $50,000 to Blugold Marching Band

A UW-Eau Claire alumni couple has donated $50,000 to the Blugold Marching Band to become band's first patrons. Tom Flesch of Powell, Ohio, graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1974 with degrees in business administration and economics, and his wife, Jeannie, received her bachelor of science degree in education in 1973. Tom, president and CEO of Gordon Flesch Co. Inc., and Jeannie both serve on the UW-Eau Claire Foundation board of directors.

A portion of the Fleschs' gift will sponsor the marching band's trip to Rome, where on New Year's Day 2008 the band will play in St. Peter's Square for Pope Bendict XVI and an expected audience of 100,000 people. The gift also will help the band purchase additional uniforms to accommodate its rapid growth and for travel expenses to other venues. Full story.

Football team's playoff run ends with loss to Bethel
The UW-Eau Claire football team's second appearance ever in the national playoffs concluded Saturday, Nov. 24, in a 21-12 loss to Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn. Full story.

The Blugolds finished with a season win-loss record of 9-3, their best since a 10-3 season in 1998, the only other year UW-Eau Claire competed in the national playoffs.

Fancy dancer Larry Yazzie to perform Nov. 28

World champion fancy dancer Larry Yazzie will present a program titled "Honoring the Spirit" Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in UW-Eau Claire's Schofield Auditorium.

An international lecturer, educator and performer, Larry Yazzie consistently takes top honors at American Indian powwows throughout the United States and Canada, and won the world championship for the northern style fancy dance in 1995. He has shared his culture throughout North America, South America, Europe and Australia. Notable appearances include the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games, the 1999 Goodwill Games in Russia, the 2005 Belo Horizante International Cultural Festival in Brazil, and the 2005 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. 'Let's Do Lunch' topic
Dr. Sean Hartnett, UW-Eau Claire professor of geography and anthropology, will discuss what makes the lower Chippewa River valley special and the best ways to experience it at a Nov. 28 luncheon sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association. Hartnett will give present "The Lower Chippewa River: A World-Class Natural Area" from noon to 1 p.m. at Sweetwater's Restaurant. The presentation is the first of a series on the Chippewa River and is part of the Alumni Association's "Let's Do Lunch" series. Full story.

Nursing alumna to speak about work at Abu Ghraib

"A Nurse at Abu Ghraib" is the topic of UW-Eau Claire's 2007 M.P. Coffman Lecture from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at Fanny Hill in Eau Claire.

Retired Lt. Col. Deanna Germain, U.S. Army Reserve — a UW-Eau Claire alumna, nurse practitioner, speaker and co-author of "Reaching Past the Wire: A Nurse at Abu Ghraib" — will describe her experiences with the physical and emotional difficulties that she and other nurses endured as they cared for U.S. soldiers and Iraqi detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison hospital. Early registration is recommended as space is limited; the registration deadline is Dec. 6. Full story and registration information.

Chamber Choir to stage 'Ye Olde Madrigale Dinner'
The UW-Eau Claire Chamber Choir will present its annual "Ye Olde Madrigale Dinner" at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Council Fire Room of W.R. Davies University Center.

The Madrigale Dinner features a 15th-century-style banquet, show and selections of madrigale style music performed by the Court Chamber Choir, directed by Gary Schwartzhoff, professor of music. The choir, composed of 24 UW-Eau Claire musicians, plays a royal court celebrating a successful harvest and the excitement of the holiday season. The court has gathered in the Great Hall of Lord and Lady Chamberlain's castle where they will share a night of laughter over the antics of the court jester. Full story.

Student ensembles to give fall performances
UW-Eau Claire's University Band and Jazz Ensemble I will give performances this week in the Haas Fine Arts Center's Gantner Concert Hall.

• The University Band, directed by Randal Dickerson, associate professor of music, will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Full story.
• Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Robert Baca, professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. The concert will include a performance by special guest pianist Nachito Herrera. Full story.
