Remember power-saving computer
practices
To
help reduce costly electrical bills, the Physical Plant Planning Committee
of the University Senate, Facilities Planning and Management, and Learning
and Technology Services urges university employees to:
- Turn computer monitors and printers off at night.
Do not turn off CPUs/towers. LTS has been remotely turning them to
"stand by" mode via Microsoft's Systems Management Server.
Leaving CPUs/towers in "stand by" mode uses very little
energy. In "stand by" mode computers can be "woken
up" remotely — for LTS to scan for viruses or for users
to control computers remotely. Also, "stand by" mode allows
for quick startup for returning users.
- For weekends and short vacations, turn off monitors
and printers, and shut down CPUs.
- For extended absences, continue turning off
monitors and printers and shutting down CPUs. Be aware that for the
first hour after computers are turned back on, they will be slow as
some automatic system updating is performed.
