AAC&U journal features faculty members' article
The winter issue of the Association of American Colleges and Universities' prestigious journal Liberal Education features an article written by two members of the UW-Eau Claire faculty. In "A Liberal Education Scorecard," Dr. Andrew Phillips, interim associate vice chancellor of academic affairs and interim dean of graduate studies, and Dr. Michael Wick, professor of computer science and chair of the computer science department, describe their evolution from discipline-specific educators to liberal educators Within a week of publication, their scorecard model was already being used to structure faculty conversations on liberal education at such prestigious liberal arts institutions as Wellesley College in Massachusetts and Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, Wick said. For the second consecutive year, UW-Eau Claire has been recognized for its outstanding community service programs by a federal agency charged with fostering an ethic of volunteerism and service in America. UW-Eau Claire was among 127 public and private colleges, universities and professional schools named in the 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service, compiled by the Corporation for National and Community Service. UW-Eau Claire joined UW-Madison and Marquette University as the only three schools in Wisconsin named to the 2007 Honor Roll with Distinction. Full story. Copies of the draft strategic plan have been distributed to all faculty and staff. Copies also can be downloaded and comments on the plan can be submitted on the strategic planning Web site. Faculty/staff appreciation luncheon set for Feb. 29 At 12:30 p.m. Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich will voice his thanks for faculty and staff efforts and service to UW-Eau Claire. Door prize drawings will be the held throughout luncheon. As a special incentive, faculty and staff who contribute to the "Leap at the Chance" 2008 campus campaign prior to the lunch (including those who have an ongoing payroll deduction pledge) will be entered in a drawing to win lunch for two at The Dulany in Davies Center. Student volunteers make a difference
Most weekdays, 30 to 40 UW-Eau Claire students spend time volunteering at Longfellow Elementary School in Eau Claire.
UW-Eau Claire volunteers' support allows the school to offer programming that would not otherwise be possible, said Holly Larson, Longfellow partnership coordinator. These programs are important to the students who attend Longfellow, a school where 70 percent of the students live in poverty and 30 percent are bilingual. The volunteers represent a variety of academic programs from across the university campus. Some work in classrooms, others provide after-school tutoring. Another group of students participates in a program mentoring fifth-grade girls. Members of Blugold sports teams offer playground demonstrations, and the kinesiology department runs a before-school running club. In addition, members of UW-Eau Claire's Epsilon Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority have "adopted" the elementary school, and they donate time in many ways, including decorating for and chaperoning school dances, fundraising and working at monthly "Lighted School House" family nights.
Dr. Crispin Pierce's presentation, "Human Health Effects of Global Climate Change," will run from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Sweetwater's Restaurant in Eau Claire. He will talk about how heat waves, spread of disease, air pollution and Milwaukee's cryptosporidium outbreak all can be traced to global warming. Full story. 'The Threepenny Opera' to open Feb. 28 "The Threepenny Opera" is directed by Dr. Terry Allen, professor of theatre, with musical direction by Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, associate professor music; choreography by Dr. Toni Poll-Sorensen, professor of dance; costume design by Mallory Prucha-Rishoi, an artist in music and theatre arts; and scenic and lighting design by Kevin D.
